Description:This edition of A Map of Asia With Its Principal Divisions by J. Palaret, with several Additions & Improvements by L. Delarochette is not dated explicitly but may be dated in part by reliance on the dated historic voyages of exploration shown on the finely engraved, hand colored map. We learn by reading the map that in 1747 "About 7 leagues North East of Cape de Espiritu Santo 1 July 1747 Admiral Anson took the Acapulco Ship Value 350,000 Pounds." That is the most recent dated event. The map notes an earlier event "Land Seen by Mr. Tchrikoiv nearing Berring Island where he was cast away and died" in 1741. Exploration of the Frozen Ocean in 1648 by the Russian Ships that predates the English Arctic explorations is noted. The map is definitively dated by reference to the atlas c. 1755 in which it appears. Please see below. The purpose of the… Read More

This detailed map is early enough that the territory and primary features shown are Native American tribal names and their respective territorial lands. Certain natural features are labeled such as "Iroquois or Champlain L", "Lake Errie" and fishing grounds are denoted off the coast in Nova Scotia with an engraver's dotted line. Competing claims by the colonizing British and French are expressed graphically and with labeling on the map. The north border of the area labeled "Florida" on the map carries the legend "Limits stipulated 1738". A place called "Granville's Pryory" is shown on the map. Otherwise, the… Read More

It appeared in a book titled A Compendium of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages, vol. 3, p. 125 and is based on an earlier map by Fry & Jefferson of 1753. Geographic features graphically dominate the map, with the "Blue Ridge Peaks" shown in relief graphically along with the Allagany Mountains. The "spring head" of the Patowmack River is labeled near "Lawrel Thickets" that must have been a considerable area to appear on a map as well as the Great Falls on the Patowmack. Many meadows are located and named, including the "Tobacco Row M." in a land area between two distant rivers. English towns such as Norfolk, Williamsburg, James T. and Belhaven or Alexandria are located, rivers and streams are labeled and… Read More

This real estate development, a project of the Presbyterian Church originally, was one of many investment opportunities being promoted in northern New York State in the centennial year of the America's founding. Newspaper articles for the region describe this and other real estate developments. The map also features an advertisement by George L. Suhr, of Suhr & Wieboldt Funeral Directors with the early telephone exchange Mission 1. The map is copyright but not dated. A date range of 1918 to 1920 is most likely, due to the presence on the map of the Twin Peaks Tunnel that opened to Muni service in 1918. Candrian was a San Francisco and vicinity tour operator and published maps and guide books to San Francisco, Oakland and surrounding cities with special reference to public transportation. Therefore, the presence of train, municipal and other transit lines such as ferry on his maps is an essential… Read More
