[Drop title]. [No date, but circa 1800]. Unbound manuscript in ink on laid paper, 225 x 165 mm, 3 1/4 pages; initialled 'D' at the foot; in very good condition, clean and legible. This manuscript is an extract from a work entitled Une Relation du Groenland (1647), written by Isaac de La Peyrère (1596-1676) while he was secretary in the French embassy at Copenhagen. The work was completed at the request of François de la Mothe le Vayer (1588-1672), who was a French philosopher and the first to propose Greenland as the location of Atlantis. Probably dating to the late eighteenth century, the manuscript includes La Peyrère's summary of the climate and fauna of Greenland, Norway and Iceland, including descriptions of the harvest, the 'white bears' in these regions, the narwhal (the unicorn of the sea), and the sea surrounding Spitzbergen.

Description:
Manuscript letter, single folio sheet, dated 16 February 1716, signed Louis (in the hand of Louis XV's secretary), countersigned by Louis Phélypeaux, Marquis de La Vrillière, Secretary of State, addressed to Cardin Le Bret, member of the parliament of Provence and nephew of the regent, the Duc d'Orléans, stating that a royal edict has been sent to the parliament of Provence 'which explains the circumstances in which merchants of my Kingdom must obtain passports from me, to which edict I append a declaration forbidding any of my subjects to conduct commerce in the South Seas'; the verso with address of Le Bret; the document is complete, legible and remarkably fresh, with original folds. In France, the period 1715-1723 is known as the Régence, during which time Philippe, Duc d'Orléans, was in charge of the country's affairs owing to the fact that Louis XV was still a minor. In 1716, when this letter was written, the War of the Spanish Succession had only recently ended, and a member of the French… Read More

Description:
Manuscript in ink on blue paper (245 x 195 mm), an untitled poem of 7 quatrains (4-line stanzas), with an extensive explanatory footnote; signed and dated at bottom margin in the same hand 'Brisbane, December 2nd 1861 / Samuel Gill Mee'; verso with newspaper cuttings from 1861, suggesting that the sheet was removed from a commonplace book at some point; well preserved and legible. The author of this unpublished manuscript poem - which is of an exceptionally early date for Brisbane or, indeed, Queensland - was Samuel Gill Mee, a compositor who from the late 1850s until his death in 1909 worked on the first three incarnations of Brisbane's most famous newpspaper: the Moreton Bay Courier, The Courier, and the Brisbane Courier. The opening quatrain reads: 'In a fierce flaming desert wild-laughing, and leaping / Into its hell with demoniac groans; / And his murderer sleeping while wild dogs are keeping / Carnival over his body and bones!' Mee's footnote, referring to these opening lines, reads:… Read More

An important contemporary manuscript record of the Mixed Commission established to draw up a Treaty Marine and numerous other trade agreements between the English and Dutch in the wake of the Second Peace of Westminster at the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Dutch War.  The Treaty of Westminster was signed by the United Provinces (Netherlands) and England in February 1674. It was of immense importance in shaping the history of North America, as it renewed the Treaty of Breda (1667), which had originally confirmed the conquest of New Netherland by the English, and produced the Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The 1674 Treaty provided for a number of territorial… Read More

/ entworfen und gezeichnet 1823 nach dem Krusenstern'schen Atlasse umgearbeitet 1825. Weimar: Im Verlage des Geograph. Instituts, 1826. Engraved map with hand colouring, 430 x 595 mm, dissected and laid down on linen, folding to 220 x 190 mm; map of Australia and Oceania with relief shown by hachures; in very good condition with a tiny amount of spotting, the linen backing with mild foxing. Although the coastlines of Australia, New Guinea, the Indonesian archipelago, New Zealand, island Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia are all essentially complete, perhaps the most striking aspect of this map is the vast emptiness of the as yet unexplored interiors of both the Australian continent (Neu Holland) and New Guinea. The cartographer, C.F. Weiland, was trained as a military mapmaker, and as head of map and globe production at the Weimar Geographical Institute, a publishing house and research institute, he was responsible for revising many earlier maps by important cartographers. Weiland's maps are noted… Read More
