1835. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Small 4to. Manuscript on paper. [2], 53 pp. Complete. Stitched (plain paper wrappers torn and frayed along spine, with loss), edges untrimmed. Minor blemishes to the text but unsophisticated. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Highly curious and apparently unpublished German Romantic play concerning the "Death of Lottchus" (in Part 1) and his ghost (in Part 2), "The Happiness of Marriage." The action takes place in Rubeland (Saxony-Anhalt). Other performers include Flanko, Wolf, Fritzus and his wife Perdestalla, Liebling, and Maloss. Despite extensive searching, we have been unable to find any reference to a play such as this.

Description:
S.l. (probably Santa Barbara, CA), 1936. Unbound. Very good. Large 4to. (8 1/2 x 11"). Unpaginated: 23 chapters + Epilogue, each individually paginated. Typewritten on "Superior Manifold - Esleeck Mfg Co." Preserved in a protective cloth case. This appears to be the only significant Cameron Rogers manuscript still in private ownership (the University of Oregon has ten of them, for which see below). It is an early typescript of the novel "Manila Galleon," composed while the author's working title was "That Year's Galleon." The novel, a work of historical fiction, explores the Manila-Acapulco gallion trade, and is set in the Philippines in 1621. Among the characters are: Don Alonzo Fajardo y Tenza, the Governor; his disturbingly beautiful wife Dona Catalina Maria Sembrano; Don Juan de la Mesa y Suero, the captain of the Spanish galleon La Nuestra Senora de la Vida which sails from Manila to Acapulco. The work was published in 1936 by D. Appleton-Century Company, New York (consisting of 232 pages).… Read more

Cincinnati: s.n., 1867. FIRST EDITION. Softcover. Good. Original publisher's printed pale green wrappers (chipped). 128 pp. 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5-1/2". Some general wear & soiling. A touch of foxing. Unsightly abrasion to rear wrapper, resulting in some loss. "A Book for the Family" in which are described, in the most graphic detail, over 100 murders in Cincinnati and environs. This highly curious volume represents a genuinely early American work in the literary genre now known as "True Crime," about which see especially Mark Steltzer, "True Crime: Observations on Violence and Modernism" (2007), passim. True Crime as a form of entertainment created important American pop culture icons, namely the sociopaths, the psychopath, the mass murderer, and the serial killer, all of whom are represented herein. The full title adds useful information about the crimes, including: "Trials and Executions of John May ; Philip Lewis, (colored) ; John Cowan, the Murderer of his Family ; Washburn and his Associates, Davis… Read more

Description:
Alabama (?), 1870. Very Good. Small 4to (245 x 190 mm). 26 pp. of manuscript entries on lined paper, bound with brads along the top edge (worn). Evidence of what may have been a cover sheet at front and back. Overall toning and soiling. Preserved in a lig-free phase box. Postbellum manuscript catalogue of a private library located in the American South, likely Alabama. Vernacular library catalogues such as this one provide incredible insight into what people were actually reading. Our manuscript provides a glimpse into an as-yet unidentified collection in which were contained a wide variety of genres and subjects beyond those influenced by contemporary events (e.g. works on Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee). The library contained three bookcases, numbered 1-3; the catalogue is well arranged according to Subject, and records the literary genres contained within each bookcase. Bookcase no. 1 contains works of fiction (Dickens, Thackery, Twain, Jules Verne, etc.), memoirs and biographies, classics,… Read more

Description:
Cape Cod, MA, 1793. Folio (paper stock ca. 300 x 200 mm). 24 pp. on laid paper, MS entries covering every page. In contemporary "home-made" rough canvas wrappers (worn), some damage (with loss of text) and inherent soiling to text. At least 8 ff. have been excised at the end and elsewhere. Fair condition, but an extraordinary survival. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. This crude manuscript graphically exhibits the extraordinary lengths to which colonial American students had to go in order to teach themselves. Provincial home-made textbooks such as this one almost never survive; we are unable to explain how -- or why -- this relic survived at all, especially considering its lamentable condition. The manuscript was certainly owned by the Higgins family of Cape Cod, who had descended from the Mayflower and who fought during the Revolutionary War (see below). The present ciphering book solves often complex math and word problems, generally in the service of commerce. Currency… Read more

Description:
Unbound. Very good. 4to. [16] pp. comprised of 8 half sheets folded once, unstitched, edges untrimmed. First leaf soiled, some dust-soiling throughout. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve with lig-free board backing. Highly curious French legal manuscript concerning a rare 1543 Ordonnance on taxes on salt for preserving fish, a matter not only of national but international significance. The first and only edition of the "Ordonnance" was printed by Etienne Roffet in 1543, together with an Edict on lifting the Salt Tax (as here). While the Roffet tracts have never been reprinted in full, and only one copy has survived (at BnF), it is unlikely that the present MS is a direct copy because the Roffet edition is 36 pages in length, and is likewise a small 4to. The rarity of the Ordonnances is attested by the fact that even as early as the mid-18th century, no printed copy could be procured; that a MS was commissioned is self-evident, but by whom, or for what purpose, is no longer clear. There can be no doubt… Read more

San Francisco: Institute of Historical Cartography, 1963. First Edition. Near Fine. Together five vols. in six. Large folios (355 x 260 mm). Original publisher's dark green buckram over gray linen, spines gilt-stamped, in the ORIGINAL SLIPCASES which are almost never seen. With the original prospectus. ONE OF THE GREAT WORKS OF CARTOGRAPHIC HISTORY -- easily the most important work on Western American maps from 1540 to the Civil War. "Wheat" (as it is known) is the ne-plus-ultra of its genre, and takes pride of place as the preeminent work on this subject, surely never to be surpassed. Comprising more than 1,600 pages and featuring more than 300 high-quality reproductions of rare maps and plans (some double-page), plus a "Bibliocartography" describing 1,302 maps, "Wheat" is nothing short of epic. Howell ("California 50" no. 1655) assigns justifiable praise: "A truly monumental work on the cartography of the West, from the Spanish Entrada to the Geological Survey of 1877. It was the culmination of a… Read more

Original pictorial wrappers printed in blue and black, 9.25 x 5.75 inches, [i-iv], 21-30, [31-32], 39-52, [53-54], 61-74, [75-76], 85-100 pages [i.e. 64 pages], as published. Full-page woodcut illustrations included in the pagination. Copyright date on the title page of 1863; the dated preliminary text dated January 15, 1864. Somewhat worn, some staining and light foxing, especially toward the rear; a good, sound copy. Fact or fiction, the present account celebrates the covert role of women as gatherers of military intelligence during the Civil War. The spectacular illustrated cover is given a full-page reproduction by Alice Fahs' in her "The Imagined Civil War: Popular Literature of the North and South, 1861-1865" (p. 243).
