Scattered foxing; some corners a little creased or bumped. FIRST EDITION. Scarce. Thomas Osborne Rice, a native of Brighton, Massachusetts, served as minister of the Circular Church for four years, remaining in South Carolina after secession and for much of the Civil War. Before coming to Charleston, he served as minister in West Killingly, Connecticut, and then in Boston (1858-1860). He resigned from the Circular Church in 1864 and crossed the lines to return to Massachusetts. Rice was the last minister of the old Circular Church, an architectural landmark of antebellum South Carolina. It was a great domed structure built in 1804 after the designs of Robert Mills, the esteemed Charleston architect best known for designing the original Washington Monument. Chipping to wraps, title, and corners of a few other leaves, not affecting text, and a number of short, marginal tears. Spine has mostly perished, but gatherings are held by the original stitching. Wraps heavily stained, not affecting legibility. Light marginal damp stains throughout; marginal soiling in a few places. A poor, but complete copy. SECOND EDITION, so stated on the front wrap, expanded. The first edition of the previous year contained only the first part of this work (the 24-page manual). The second edition includes a new section, "Ritual" (the second grouping of 33 pages). It contains a diagram of a lodge room and descriptions of ceremonies for opening meetings, initiations, recognizing visitors, installing officers, and instituting new lodges. Original olive-green cloth over beveled boards, stamped in gilt and black; top edge gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. [28.7 cm.] Very good. Light soiling to covers; very light foxing to prelims and final plate (bound after the last page of text); still a respectable copy. FIRST OF THIS ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Copies in the original cloth are a bit scarce; the work is more often found in printed paper-covered boards. The text was originally printed as an article in the "North British Review" (Nov. 1863), and several separate editions followed. The frontispiece portrait is a reproduction of a watercolor, presumed to be the work of Miss Isabella Keith, who was Marjorie's adored, teenage cousin. [19.4 pages.] Very good. Two small marks near base of spine, some soil and light wear to edges of boards, light rubbing to spine ends and hinges. A few minor traces of soil to edges. Still a bright, solid copy with clean interior. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Preceded by the English edition with the title beginning, "The Ship's Adventure" (1901).

[16.9 cm.] Near fine. Minor rubbing to front hinge, upper corners a trifle bumped, still an excellent copy. Thirteenth edition, revised and enlarged, and the first edition by this publisher. Originally issued in 1902, all previous editions were published by The Inland Printer. "Through the courtesy of the Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Brooklyn, New York, we are able to add in this new edition illustrations and other matter relating to the later-model machines." --preface.

Ex-Sondley Reference Library with tasteful bookplate on the front pastedowns, inconspicuous embossed stamp to titles and a few other leaves (including three of the plates), small number stamp on verso of titles and in margin of one other leaf in each volume, and faint shadow of a removed call label at base of each spine. Bindings are lightly rubbed on extremities, a little sunned on the spine, and boards show some light soil and sun (most noticeable on third volume). Light foxing to titles with only occasional traces elsewhere. Light horizontal crease to each frontispiece and short marginal tears along same line, in some cases neatly repaired, with minimal impact on images. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the front free endpaper. It reads: "For my friend and `contrib,' R.D. Hartman, this volume of `Mere Melodies' is cordially inscribed by the author. Edwin Meade Robinson (`Ted Robinson'). Cleveland, May 28, 1919." The signed book plate of the recipient, Ralph D. Hartman, appears on the front pastedown. Edwin Meade Robinson (1878-1946) was a longtime columnist at the Cleveland "Plain Dealer," and the literary editor of the newspaper. His column, "Philosopher of Folly," contained unsigned contributions by numerous others, such as Mr. Hartman, as well as his own verse and prose. The cloth is a little faded and shows some faint stains; endpapers are browned. Moderate scattered foxing; leaves browned along the edges. Good plus. Penciled owner's inscription, "B.F. Crosland, New York, 1857," on front flyleaf. This was perhaps Benjamin Franklin Crosland (1826-1899), merchant and hotelier of Salem. FIRST EDITION. A history of the Moravians in North Carolina from the founding of Salem in 1752 to the time of publication. There are chapters on the Cherokee War (1759), the Revolutionary War, the founding of the Salem Female Academy, and the commencement of the Indian and Negro missions (in 1801 and 1822, respectively), plus lists of ministers, teachers, early settlers, and historic buildings. Short closed tear to first and final leaves, affecting one word with no loss; scattered foxing and soiling; tiny hole to margin of one leaf. Provenance: Small printed bookplate of Joseph Keith Newell (1837-1895), Springfield, Mass., who served in the Civil War as a captain of Co. I, 10th Massachusetts. Small chips to the spine, wraps are tanned and show some stains especially along and adjacent to the spine. The interior is generally clean with a few minor traces of foxing. Previous owner's small name-stamp on top edge. Good. FIRST EDITION. Contains an interesting article on spiritualism, titled "Modern Necromancy" (pp. 512-527). The author rejects the idea that the phenomena observed during séances are caused by actual communication with the departed and suggests that they are instead produced by a "peculiar mode of the medium's own consciousness" (p. 515). The idea of a divided or "double" consciousness on the part of the medium is explored.
