Description:
First American edition of the first novel from one of the classic mystery writers -- she later wrote as Josephine Tey, and this book was reissued under that name. Scarce in jacket. Extremely scarce with a signature, even though the book is not signed: this copy is accompanied by a postcard to Miss Katherine King, postmarked at Inverness in March 1950, thanking her for sending the Pocket Books "which I find fascinating," signed by Gordon Daviot. The book is in very good condition -- it is slightly cocked, the spine is slightly discolored and worn, and there are two worn spots on the front edges of the bottom. I've left the previous bookseller's pencil notes on the flyleaf, because the book came from Otto Penzler's Mysterious Bookshop in NY, and I believe they're in his hand. The postcard was in the book when I bought it -- when I asked him if that was the correct price in it, he said "Yep -- blew that one, didn't I!" and he let me buy it at an astonishing price. He was a gentleman as a bookseller, and… Read more

Description:
An uncommon book in any printing. 4 more stories of Miles Pennoyer, psychic detective, by the author of Number Seven, Queer Street. Jacket is unclipped, but somewhat frayed with several closed tears, some spine fading, and a shadow of smoke damage from a 1968 fire. Previous owner's note on FFE indicates it was received in the US in Feb 1960; the book was reprinted the first month it was printed (Oct 1959) and this is one of the second printings. Very few copies are available on the Internet, usually only one at a time. The previous owner was my father, which is how I know the date of the fire! Book is in near-Fine condition, jacket only Good.

Description:
Garden City: Doubleday Junior Books, 1938. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/no dustjacket. Winner of the second Caldecott Medal for illustrated children's books. Handforth was an artist who worked primarily in engravings and lithographs -- the illustrations in this evocative story of a young girl at a festival in China is in the style of his lithos. The Boston Public Library is working on a catalog raisonne of his print work. This book is quite uncommon in the first edition (as with most Doubleday books, the first says "first edition" on the verso of the title page -- in this case it's on the same line as the copyright information and moderately easy to miss). This copy has no dustjacket and a moderately stained binding -- the gold leaf is also somewhat discolored on both the spine and the front cover. The binding is tight and the endpapers and pages are clean. The original jacket was printed on unfinished stock and is quite fragile -- later jackets are on coated stock and… Read more

Description:
A solid copy of this edition of reprints of 12 plates by McBey, who was one of the more influential figures of the rise of etchings in the early 20th Century. The pages on this copy are moderately foxed; foxing does not affect the rectos of the tipped-in plates, though a few have slightly visible stains on the versos.
Taped to the front free endpaper is a typed letter, signed, from McBey to Roi Partridge at Mills College from 1941 talking about a meeting while McBey was visiting the San Francisco area. Laid in are also three handwritten letters from McBey's wife Marguerite to Partridge and his wife (his third wife, May Ellen Fisher) from 1941 and 1943, talking about photography, their visits, and potential future visits. Also included is a four-page prospectus for the Minton, Balch edition of The Etchings of James McBey by Malcolm C. Salaman, including list prices for the book in both its trade and limited editons, with three reproductions of McBey etchings. The prospectus shows serious edge-wear,… Read more

Description:
New York: Putnam, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/good. Heinlein's fourth and last Hugo winner. A reasonable copy: jacket rubbed, missing a small portion near the spine affecting the T in "The". Gold printing on spine somewhat tarnished. Book looks used, Jacket is unclipped, with $5.95 price. List of titles facing the title page has "Rocket Ship Galileo" written on the side in ink -- apparently this title was left off the list of titles by Heinlein. An acceptable copy of a book that is seldom offered. Not ex-lib. tsw

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A very nice copy of the first Brother Cadfael novel. In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. The jacket is unclipped, and the book was not read more than once or twice. A nice copy of a cornerstone volume. Any photo attached to my listings are of the actual… Read more
