Description:
Toronto: Thomas Allen, 1952 Why in the world am I listing this? um, well it was on the radio, before TV. It takes me back about 70 years.... I can't help it, even if I cringe when I hear the music in my head. Even when I look at the picture and see an imitation, surely, of Astrid Lindgren, somehow I am listing this reading copy only (the inside is pretty good), stained book with pieces missing from the spine bottom. I think I liked the rhythm of the name, as much as anything, because for my 6th birthday, my aunt sent me a doll, blush, a black doll that she had made and I said Oh! Maggie Muggins! as soon as I saw her. These are my roots.

Description:
Gordonsville, Virginia, U.S.A.: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2005 This is a first novel and also a tribute to the power of reading, apparently aimed at youth. It is a first edition and at the moment absolutely like new in similar jacket; however, I want to read it, so I've allowed for a bit less in terms of condition if it doesn't sell too quickly! It looks fascinating!

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1929 Circa 1940 reprint of the 1929 MccLelland & Stewart edition. Tan Boards with Black lettering, 328 pages. Spine is slightly cocked. Very light rubbing to corners and spine. Front endpaper contains booksellers foil sticker and gift inscription dd 1951. Although colour frontispiece is advertised, it is not included. No dust jacket save one panel with photo and biography of LMM. At time of printing, she was still alive and she had received her OBE from King George V, thus dating this book roughly between 1939 and 1942 (although, given the nonexistent frontispiece, it is certainly possible that no changes were made to the jacket after her death. Vintage book with no major flaws for age.

Description:
Wilmington, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Houghton Mifflin, 1996 A beautifully written and very moving children's book ( admit to being a little misty eyed after reading it). The story is set around the old magpie rhyme which tells fortunes by the number of birds seen, "one for sorrow, two for joy. etc." It is unfolded in the correspondence between a young girl and her grandfather and explores profound themes very simply: city, country; people, wildlife; joy and sorrow. Beautifully illustrated by Dan Williams, book is near fine, no writing or marks, clean crisp interior, good corners and binding. DJ is unclipped, has one one inch tear at front lower spine. This is a stated first edition, first printing, full number line. A treasure of a book! ( I note that there is a reissue called Seven for a Secret, which appears to have a different illustrator and perhaps a lighter mood, but I'm not sure that was necessary. Having been raised on stories like Poor Mrs. Quack, The Little Match Girl and a… Read More
