SCRANTON PENNSYLVANIA PA. Good. 1898. Leather. On offer an incredibly comprehensive handwritten and significant 10-year manuscript diary of former Yale University student Attorney Thomas J. Wells of Scranton, Pennsylvania chock full and spanning ten full years of his life beginning January 1st 1898. Importantly, beginning in 1898, the diary contains significant legal and Spanish American War entries. [BIO NOTES: The Wells (or Welles as it was sometimes spelled) family was quite prominent during the 1800s and early 1900's research suggests there is a connection with Henry Wells, co-founder of Wells-Fargo.] There are three thousand six hundred plus of entries. The title page of the diary reads, in his own hand, "Ten Years of My Life, Thos. J. Wells, Scranton PA" and "Compliments of E.B. Sturges". PLYMOUTH NEW HAMPSHIRE NH. Good. 1863. On offer are six diaries from two sisters coming of age together in the mid to late 19th century in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The two sisters are Mary and Ellen Clark. There are three diaries written by Mary: 1863, 1864, and 1866. For her sister Ellen, the years are 1878, 1884, and 1885. Ms. Mary Clark’s diaries are an interesting look at the life of a young woman coming of age with the backdrop of an America plunged into Civil War. Her first diary starts in February of 1864 and ends on September 30th, 1865. The contents are hand written in a tiny neat pencilled cursive hand. Contents of the diary on a day to day basis are mostly on weather, travels or illness of other residence of the Town. There are, however mentions of historical significance. Wilkinsburg Pa. Good+. 1928. Softcover. This is a small memorandum booklet with 6 trips in it. The first one is titled "Southern Trip Sept 27 to Oct 5th 1930 in Ford Coupe." They leave Wilkinsburg Pa. at 1:30 and tell the route they took and that they arrived at Grafton West Virginia or Virginia. There are to Niagara Falls 1930, New England 1928 and trip to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933. The World's Fair Trip is written on about 12 pages. It mentions going to the different exhibits including Ripley's Believe It or Not exhibit. It mentions which way they went into the fair and it costing 50 cent. Because there were not any interstate roads they go through a lot of small towns and it seems to take a lot longer to get to places. France. Good with no dust jacket. Ephemera. On offer is a fascinating and brief description of one of France’s great Pharmacists in the NapoleonicWars, Pierre-Irenee Jacob. This manuscript appears to be an excerpt of a larger document. The author of the document is unknown. The subject however, is not. Pierre-Irenee Jacob was born in Metz, June 27, 1782, he served 10 years in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. He crossed Europe from Paris to the army of the Coasts, from Prussia to Madrid, from Saxony to Bérézina, from Jena to Warsaw, on foot very often or in a cart. He was captured twice, was victim of an ambush in Spain and was a miraculous survivor of the retreat from Russia "the march of misery" in which only 10,000 men out of 442,000 survived. On offer is a collection of a minor French nobleman's receipts and documents dated 1870 to 1873.This collection of two dozen documents tell the tax story of the Auxillon (sometimes spelled Auxilhon) property in the town of Sauveterre in southern France. The property in question is a castle built in the 16th century by the Auxillon family. To this day, the property is owned by descendants of the founding Auxillons. The Auxillion family originally came from the Picardy region of France. The original castle that sat on the lot in Sauveterre had been destroyed in the early 1400s and was sold as a ruin to the Auxillion family who rebuilt it over a number of years. During the French Revolution, it was looted by mobs when the owners fled for their lives. After the Restoration, the castle was returned to the family and it was reconstructed.
