Description:
Moskva: Sovetskii Pisatel, 1943. Soft cover. Near Fine. First edition, 12mo 4 1/2" x 6"; pp. 3-50, [2] index; original printed wraps; minor wear to covers with a few small faint spots; near fine. Pasternak wrote his collection of poems 'On Early Trains' at a time, when Socialist realism as a cultural model was becoming more and more constricting, thus forcing the author to abandon his natural avant-garde style and resort to, in his own words, a "shoemaker" type of poetry. The poems in this collection were written between 1935-1941. The publication was allowed as a form of propaganda, showcasing the ability of the Soviet literary authorities to "rehabilitate an outrageous and bourgeois writer." Succumbing to the demands of the government did not mean Pasternak liked these particular poems. In fact, in a letter to his friend - fellow writer Daniil Danin, he called 'On Early Trains' "a useless book.

Around 1958, Ukrainian emigres in the US came up with the idea of building a memorial to "Ukraine's Favorite Son," author Taras Shevchenko, as a way of making a statement about their community and of the situation in their homeland. The campaign gained momentum and in 1960, Congress passed a bill, which allocated land in Washington DC for the Ukrainians to build a statue. Platon Stasiuk, a prominent Ukrainian-American businessman and treasurer of the Shevchenko Memorial Committee, went to Ukraine in 1961, intent on taking back a container of soil from Shevchenko's grave to be placed under the monument in Washington. Expecting an appreciative committee, he was instead met with… Read More

First edition thus; 6 1/4 x 4; pp. 3-100; green wraps, ruled and printed in black; small rust spots around staples; age-toning to margins; a small insect nibble to upper corner of front wrap; very good condition. Cheaply made, emigre edition of one of Tobilevych's best known play, originally published in 1885. Writing under the pseudonym Karpenko - Karyi (1845 - 1907), he began his career as a playwright quite late in his life, with his first work Novobranets (The New Conscript) being published in 1883. He lived most of his later years under police surveillance, for his involvement with Ukrainian revolutionaries. Tobilevych wrote a total of eighteen, very popular, and often performed plays, in which he reflected on life in Russian-ruled Ukraine, the evil of ordinary people in a position of authority, and the social relations in the small, peasant villages. His works would be considered an important step forward for the… Read More
