Publisher's gilt-lettered black leather back-strip over textured boards, octavo, pp. 450 plus ads at rear for other Appleton publications. Printed endpapers. Black and white illustrations throughout, including a most generous section entitled "Figures" that runs from page 407 through page 439. Tipped-in at front of the book is a tattered advertisement for Appleton's new "Quackenbos's English Grammar." Previous owner name and 1863 date in fountain pen on free front endpaper. Book is FAIR-only, with drying of the leather spine and rubbed through board tips. Foxing, especially in the area of pp. 233-245. An occasional dog-eared page tip and a nick here and there on a leaf's fore-edge.

Promotional/Explanatory pamphlet for once popular Encyclopedia Britannica Home Reading Guides, circa late 1950s. Publisher's original stapled illustrated wrappers, quarto, pp. 24. Mild shelf wear. Protected now in a clear display sleeve with white card-stock backing board.

Hardcover, octavo, pp. ix, 306. Illustrations. Very good in the publisher's beige cloth over white boards with spine lettering gilt. Photo-illustrated dust jacket very good and ensconced in a protective sheet of clear archival Brodart.

Publisher's red cloth with gold spine and upper board lettering, octavo, pp. 423 plus [1] page author biography colophon. Two old newspaper articles about Robert Penn Warren are laid into the book. (Also, note that the First edition Number Line does not include the Number "1," but remember that Random House does not use a "1" on their First edition Number Lines.) Dust jacket with just light shelf wear.

Publisher's gray boards with faded gilt spine lettering and black decorative upper board patterns, octavo, pp. 208. Previous owner name and Saratoga, NY address in a neat hand on free front endpaper, dated October, 1898. Light shelf and handling wear. Foxing spots near bottom edge of pages 41-51 (see photo 6), and pp. 199-208 are creased near bottom, as though book were stored carelessly at some point (see photo 7). GOOD condition withal.

Stapled wrappers, octavo, pp. 59 plus ads. Fair condition with shelf and handling wear. Staples rusty. Spine rubbed and strengthened long ago with a strip of tape. Previous owner has made a few pencil notes and a library call number inside front wrap. Numerical stamp at top edge of 1st page. Text unmarked.

Stapled illustrated wrappers, oblong octavo (7 3/4 inches in height x 10 inches wide), 32 captioned black and white illustrations on pp. [32]. No publication date but circa early 20th century. Wrappers are separating at foot of spine and have edgewear and shelf soiling. Page tips bumped lightly. A few old creases. The two page panorama view "Niagara Falls from the Canadian Side" at the center of the pamphlet has worked loose from the staples and is simply laid in. Ensconced now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card stock backing board.

First edition, so stated, publisher's beige cloth with brown spine lettering and an upper board etching in blind, book measures approximately 9 x 6 inches. Illustrations by Thomas O'Donohue. GOOD condition with light shelf and handling wear. Upper board fore-edge protrudes ever so slightly beyond lower board fore-edge, as in an overbite. Internally clean and unmarked. Price-clipped dust jacket GOOD with chipping and short tears with no loss at spine ends and fold points. At some judicious point past, jacket was ensconced in Brodart.

Publisher's textured green card-stock wrappers, octavo, pp. 146. We've graded this copy POOR because the publisher's binding glue has dried out completely over the decades and the leaves are beginning to pull away from the binding (see our photo number 4). Additionally, spine is worn and eroding at crown and at foot. A tear at the foot has been mended with a piece of tape. Previous owner has made several marginal notations.

Removed from a bound volume, octavo, pp. 30 plus Officers of the Society roster. Just light shelf wear. GOOD and ensconced now in a clear protective display sleeve with white cardstock backing board.

Reprinted in facsimile from the edition of 1842. Nicely done up in tooled burgundy leather with large gilt decoration on both upper and lower boards; spine hubbed into four compartments with lettering and decorative devices gilt; all page edges gilt; decorative endpapers; permanent silk ribbon page marker. Includes publisher's descriptive booklet with tipped-in illustration of Mayo.

Small (6 x 4 inches) pp. 8 early twentieth century auto fabric supplies catalog. Short neat marginal tear with no loss on last leaf, otherwise GOOD in the publisher's thin stapled wrappers. Safely stowed now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card stock backing board.

First printing, octavo, pp. xv, 284. Black and white illustrations. Very good in the publisher's burgundy cloth with silver spine lettering. Dust jacket very good and ensconced in a clear sheet of archival mylar.
