Oxford, London, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. map end-papers showing Kensington in 1822; In England during the Napoleonic wars a number of prominent persons openly preferred Napoleon to George Ill. Among them were Byron, Hazlitt, William Godwin and Leigh Hunt, Charles James Fox, Lord and Lady Holland, the German Princess Caroline, the actress and novelist Mrs. Inchbald, and Samuel Whitbread. The English Napoleonists had all, as Tangye Lean shows, in their childhood been isolated from the main body of the community by its rejection of their fathers. All grew up committed to opposition. Admiration of Napoleon was only the most obvious response of a whole armoury of devices by which they defended themselves against any new threat from the majority. They all formed 'rival courts' of their own, which they ruled as dictators; they allied themselves with animals and outcasts, with the past and the future, and with victims oppressed by the central communi ... Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass. USA, 2002. Reprint. Softcover. As New. This book is one of the most successful efforts so far to communicate the results of the anthropological study of one people to another people . . . the book is not addressed to the specialist in the study of culture . . . Without resort to dramatization or oversimplification, it should communicate to many kinds of readers the goals and viewpoints of the Navahos." This collaboration between an anthropologist and a medico-psychiatrist has been a fortunate one . . . This book teaches the salutary lesson that majority culture patterns are not self- justifying ... If we have achieved a greater mastery over the forces of nature than the Navahos, perhaps they have received more by experiencing the beauty and emotional values in nature than we. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 355 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. White titles spine. Includes bibliography, index, notes & ... Read more

Mirananda, The Hague, The Netherlands, 1982. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/N/A. In these talks, given in Saanen, Switzerland and Amsterdam during 1981, Krishnamurti likens the conditioning of the human mind to the programming of a computer - 'the brain has been programmed'. It is the programming of the brain, as a result of family, social environment and education, that makes a person identify with a particular religion, or become an atheist, or adopt one of the divisions of political partisanship. Each thinks according to the particular programme which dominates him; each is caught in his own particular' network of thought'. The 'I', the ego, the personality, is no more than the selfhood of a programmed network of thinking. Thinking is a material process, the functioning of the brain; it is not in itself intelligent. Observe the divisiveness when thought asserts: 'I am a Muslim' or 'I am a Christian', or 'I am a Socialist' - each 'I' ... Read more

The book tells this critical story from the perspective of outsiders who arrived as conquerors confidently imbued with boundless faith in the efficacy of free labour. ...
