The Lynching of Claude Neal. N.A.A.C.P: New York, 1934. 8.5" x 11" inches. 8 pages. Includes photographs of Claude Neal's body, a cabin like his mother's burned by the lynch mob, and a page full of news headlines promoting the lynching. Report issued and conducted by the N.A.A.C.P into the lynching of Claude Neal. Neal was a 23 year old African American farmhand arrested in Jackson County, Florida on October 19, 1934 for allegedly raping and killing Lola Cannady, a 19 year-old white woman. The evidence against Neal was circumstantial at best, not sufficient to prove him guilty of the crime. When news got out about his arrest, white lynch mobs gathered. Neal was moved to multiple jails including 100 miles from Jackson County to Alabama. A mob of around 100 white men from Jackson County broke in and took Neal back to Florida. Important collection of 43 original vintage photos of the Public School Gardening Movement in Queens, New York City, 1916-1920. The school gardening movement was a nationwide initiative to create gardens for children, peaking1900-1920. The movement integrated many aspects of Progressive Era urban reform, including education reform, tenement house work, and the transformation of the urban environment with Small Parks and City Beautiful. Unfolding in cities across the country, including Berkeley, Boston, Dayton, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago; it was directly influenced by the educational "nature-study" movement which advocated the study of the natural world, the growth of children's gardening programs in Europe and the development of the modern playground. After several years of escalating hostilities between the First French Empire and the Italian Papal States, Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Rome on 2 February,1808. Just two months later, the Emperor decreed that the papal territories of Urbino, Ancona, Macerata and Camerino were 'irrevocably' part of 'my kingdom in Italy'. And finally in the following year (May 1809), Napoleon published the decree annexing Rome to the Grand Empire. With the Pontiff's lands now seized, all that was left for the Pope was his spiritual domain and his palaces. National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, London. 1 p., 8v0. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper. The first name of the signature is difficult to decipher. She writes that she met Lynd 'some time ago at Mrs. Green's', and that she remembered her name 'when Mrs. Heseltine suggested it in connection with a vacancy which we haw at present time at this office. I The vacancy is for a Press Writer, i.e. someone to conduct Suffrage and Anti-suffrage controwrsy in various papers, to write articles, etc.' She is unsure whether Lynd 'would care to consider anything at all of this nature or whether you are anxious to work', as she understands that 'Mr. Lynd has been ill', but suggests she telephone her to discuss the appointment.

What is the Federal Suffrage Amendment? National Woman Suffrage Publishing Company, Inc., New York: Feb. 1917. 10 x 7 in. Published just three years before 19th Amendment was passed, this rare broadside advocates for women's right to vote on a national level. The document lists states that have passed women's suffrage on a local level and where women's votes counted in the 1916 Presidential election. It references rights guaranteed in the Constitution and ends with the line: "Until the Women-People . . . elect their Representatives our government is Republican in form but not in fact." Even toning. Two horizontal creases. 3 small tears along right edge, 1 top edge. Tiny chip top left corner. Very scarce. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Very good condition.

The Nation's Success and Gratitude. Philadelphia: Henry B. Ashmead, 1864. 8.5" x 5.75" inches. Pink wrappers. An address given in Danville, Kentrucky on Thanksgiving, 1863. Scarce printing of an address thought to be given by famous Presbyterian minister and educator, Robert Jefferson Breckinridge. Delivered like a sermon but addresses earthly considerations such as the state of the war and politics. Includes a printing of Lincoln's letter, "The Negroes and the War", from April 4, 1864. In this letter, Lincoln is unapologetic about his measure to arm and enlist African-Americans in the border states into the Union Army. Lincoln writes, "When, in March, and May, and July , 1862, I made earnest and successive appeals to hte Border States, to favor compensated emancipation, I believed...military emancipation, and arming the blacks would come, unless averted by that measure.
