Provides a short history of netsuke and explanations of the subjects they portray. These small sculptures carved mostly of ivory and wood were used as toggles suspended by a cord from the obi. As Japanese dress became more Westernized, the netsuke fell out of use, and collectors and museums began to seek them out. The appendix supplies a list of netsuke carvers, metal carvers, inro-makers, and a few special short biographies.
