Description:
Collins, Oct 1993. Re-issue. Paperback. While this is basically a second science fiction/mystery featuring the team of Earth NYC police detective Elijah Bailey and android R. Daneel Olivaw, the future history thread is taken further as Bailey's determination to spur interest on Earth in colonization on other worlds steadily increases. As he works to deal with his agoraphobia, having never been outside Earth's "caves of steel" previously, this determination becomes ever more obsessive.\nThe mystery itself borrows from the classic "locked room" mystery genre. This murder could not have happened because the Solarians can't stand being in each other's presence long enough to murder another. However, it did happen and since husbands and wives do need to be in each other's presence for purposes of procreation, the victim's wife is the obvious suspect. \nBailey is hampered in his investigation by three factors: his agoraphobia, the Solarians' aversion to be in another's presence (presence of an Earthman… Read more

Description:
Vintage, Nov 1992. New edition. Paperback. Eco purports to be presenting a now-lost mediaeval manuscript. His reconstruction is indeed convincing; many of the topoi and stylistic manners of mediaeval literature are deployed as one would find in a real work from the fourteenth century (and some, such as the interpolation of lengthy detailings of tiny items at crucial points in the action, are just as annoying as in genuine mediaeval literature). It is in the dialogue that the work shows itself to be clearly distinct from works of the C14th; but this is central to the modern novel, and Eco's combination of the two forms is very interesting. He brings to life many historical figures of whom we know almost nothing apart from the works of theology, philosophy, literature that they left behind: although some of Eco's reconstructions are individualistic, it must be said.

Description:
Ace Books, Dec 1998. Paperback. A readable, thought provoking series of stories on the theme of nanotechnology. Eight short stories, one poem and a novella. No bad stories and one truely great one.\nI liked this book a lot. I had only read one of the stories before in a magazine anthology. The others were new to me.\nThe highlight of the book is "We were out of our minds with joy" by David Marusek. This story has enough in the way of ideas and development potential to spawn a novel. The price is worth paying for this novella alone. Indeed, at the price, it seems like a bargain!\nWhile Marusek is still an emerging talent, other authors featured here such as Bear, Egan, di Fillipo and Baxter will be more familiar.\nAt the end of the book, the editors add a list of further reading on the same subject. I will be following up a number of their suggestions.

Description:
Orion, Dec 2004. New edition. Paperback. Sequels are all about expectations fulfilled: "The Narrows" is at once a new novel about Michael Connolly's series hero Harry Bosch, cop turned private eye, and a sequel to "The Poet", his most highly regarded stand-alone thriller. Harry is investigating the death of Terry McCaleb--the former FBI man who dominated in "Blood Work"; Rachel Walling has been recalled from administrative exile when the Poet, her former boss Backus, starts killing again and sending taunts intended for her and McCaleb (who he also trained).\n Connolly is very good on the psychology of investigation and on the essential voyeurism involved in contemplating someone else's mental processes. This is a book with a strong sense of place--Connolly can find menace anywhere from the desert of Nevada to the half-hidden dangerous LA river that gives the book its evocative title. If the book has a weakness, it is in the personal interactions of the two detectives--both Harry and Rachel act… Read more

Description:
Phoenix, Aug 1998. New edition. Paperback. For the great philosopher, Ernest Gellner, nationalism (the principle which maintains that homogeneity of culture is the basic social and political bond) is an offspring of Romanticism, which was a reaction against the Enlightenment and the coldness of Reason.\r\nFor the Romantics, man was made by his roots, by his cultural specificity, and not by (universal) reason. Translated into politics, this means the congruence between the political and the ethnic unit, or a `nation-state'. \r\n\r\nNationalism appears only in the third stage of the evolution of mankind, in the scientific/industrial society (after foraging and agriculture).\r\nScientifically, it was heavily boosted by Darwinism and its theory of biological diversification.\r\nPhilosophically, it was aided by `Protestant-type' religion, where every man is a priest in direct contact with his God. The Protestants translated the Holy Scriptures into the vernacular, which became the `national' language of… Read more

Description:
Penguin Books Ltd, Aug 1996. New edition. Paperback. How far have city-bred enterprises removed us from our natural heritage? E.O. Wilson, author of so many wonderful ideas and books, has here revealed himself as a human being of immense strength and courtly self-awareness. Sharing with us so many aspects of his personal life and scientific endeavors, Wilson shows how a bit of dedication can overcome obstacles most of us find daunting. Raised in the rural South, losing the sight of one eye, his struggles to gain a place as a scientist are inspiring. More importantly, he makes clear how much remains to be done by the upcoming generations in determining our true place in the natural order. This work is a clarion call for aspiring young scientists to enter research, following paths similar to his own.\nThe editorial reviews here focus overmuch on the sociobiology 'controversy'. Sociobiology is a major thesis in examining humanity's place in nature. Rejecting this idea out of hand continues to impair… Read more

Penguin Books Ltd, Dec 1984. New edition. Paperback. This book is one of the funniest I have ever read. From beginning to end it is hysterically funny and warm hearted. Who could forget the poisonous loathsome prickly, that always grows next to stiles or the only available toilet spot? Or the life cycle of the fish finger, that shy and retiring creature?\nThis book is guaranteed to lighten up even the most depressing and gloomy day.

Description:
HarperPerennial, May 2004. New edition. Paperback. Nature Via Nurture" follows on from Matt Ridley's bestselling "Genome". He takes on a centuries-old question: is it nature or nurture that makes us who we are? Ridley asserts that the question itself is a "false dichotomy". Using copious examples of human and animal behaviour, he presents the notion that our environment affects the way our genes express themselves.\n Ridley writes that the switches controlling our 30,000 or so genes not only form the structures of our brains but do so in such a way as to cue off the outside environment in a tidy feedback loop of body and behaviour. In fact, it seems clear that we have genetic "thermostats" that are turned up and down by environmental factors. He challenges both scientific and folk concepts, from assumptions of what's malleable in a person to sociobiological theories based solely on the "selfish gene". \n Ridley's proof is in the pudding for such touchy subjects as monogamy, aggression, and… Read more

Description:
Addison Wesley, Jan 2001. Paperback. Network programming"--the term had a distinct meaning once, but now it begs the question, "Is there another kind?" That's why Lincoln Stein's "Network Programming with Perl" is valuable. It shows how one of the world's top Perl authorities brings the language to bear on problems that require communication among computers, showing that you may not have to resort to Java as soon as you may have thought to meet a networking requirement. What's more, Stein doesn't assume you have a lot of Perl expertise. An intermediate-level familiarity with the language should enable you to understand the examples in the book and follow the commentary: the classic code-and-commentary structure. \n Stein presents full, working scripts, calling attention to particularly interesting lines and passages by repeating them in the text. If a program makes use of an unusual or previously undiscussed function (and lots of them do, because one of the author's missions is to introduce the… Read more

Description:
Routledge, Mar 2000. 1. Paperback. After tracing the 'origins' of the concept of intertextuality from Saussure and Bakhtin's dialogism, to Kristeva and Barthes, Allen gives a critical account of current controversies and developments of these ideas. He usefully illustrates his account with contemporary examples, fully referenced, from the fields of literature, art, theatre and dance. Allen is always illucidating and thorough.
