Manuscript in ink on laid paper, 1 page (240 x 195 mm); headed 'Depot of British Prisoners at Givet in France, September 6th 1813', the document is a petition by an imprisoned British naval seaman, Joseph Hare, formerly of HMS Hussar, to the Royal Navy's prize commissioners at Greenwich Hospital, requesting that the share of Prize Bounties owing to him be paid to his wife, Hannah, back home in Yarmouth; the document was evidently prepared on behalf of the illiterate Hare by its two signatories, naval officers Thomas Fitzgerald, Boatswain of HMS Grasshopper, and James Anderson, Gunner of HMS Port Mahon; the verso has a number of annotations by naval clerks, including: 'Mrs H[anna]h Hare, Mouse's Alley, No[rth] Yarmouth, 25 April 1814'; '9 May 1814, 2.14.4 paid [signed] Le Mesurier'; 'Nothing since May 14';  '2 May 1817 Party must apply himself'; '26 July 1823 Nothing since';'10 Dec 1825 Nothing since'; original folds, well preserved and legible. Stereoscopic albumen print photograph (78 x 77 mm each image) on original yellow card mount, c 1875, imprint recto: ""Animals in the Gardens of the Zoological Society of London, Photographed from life by F. York. 34. Emeu, Dromeus Novae Hollandiae (sic)"". Superb condition. York published his series of photographs of animals in the London Zoo in the 1870s. This image of an emu (Dromaius Novaehollandiae) in captivity appears to be the earliest recorded photograph of this Australian native bird. (NLA holds a Charles Kerry photograph of a taxidermy specimen dated 1894-95).

Stereoscopic albumen print photograph (78 x 70 mm each image) on original pale yellow card mount, late 1860s, inscribed in contemporary hand in ink verso: ""Platypus"" and ""Washbourne Photo"". (These inscriptions are in the same hand, quite possibly that of the photographer himself). Light foxing to both images, otherwise very good condition with excellent clarity and rich tonal range. The travelling photographer Thomas Washbourne was prolific in his recording of life and scenery in the colony of Victoria. In the late 1860s he produced a well known series of images of Victorian Aborigines as cartes de visite for commercial sale, as well as a series of stereoscopic prints of Melbourne and surrounding regional areas. He is not recorded as working as a photographer after 1869 (Davies & Stanbury, 'The mechanical eye in Australia : photography 1841-1900'). Manuscript in ink, 4 pp., octavo bifolium (175 x 110 mm); headed '59 Berners Street, London, 17 June 1870', and signed 'J. Wolf', the letter is addressed to an anonymous recipient ('Dear Sir'), informing him that 'The Photograph of the Great Bustard is in the hands of Mr. Smit', and promising to let him know 'when the colouring of the Bustard will be ready', wishing Smit had been able to sight the skin of the bird, discussing the different markings and the difficulty of getting the correct colouring; he adds in his postscript: 'I had just finished this when Mr Smit called with the photo - & the coloured Pattern of the bustard, which I think is a great improvement as compared with the one he did first - both (the Photo & the coloured proof) I send herewith per Book-Post.'; in fine condition. Turner [Dawson Turner], and is a response to a request about the whereabouts of Professor Espir's Diploma from the Linnean Society, which Macleay says was part of a packet sent to France by Mr. Sowerby [James Sowerby, naturalist and illustrator], which the Paris agent has confirmed was forwarded; For the first part of his professional career Alexander McLeay (1767-1848) was a high-ranking civil servant with the Transport Board in London, but he was also a keen amateur naturalist - a leading member of the Linnean Society and a fellow of the Royal Society. In 1825 he was persuaded by Earl Bathurst to take up an appointment as colonial secretary for New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney with his family in January 1826. A striking piece of mourning memorabilia produced in a French colonial context, but also with a double connection to Australia. Single sheet, 480 x 250 mm, printed recto and verso, with manuscript entries recording that the permit - valid for one year - was issued on 24 July 1903 to 'femme indigène Kaïpiane', resident of the Loyalty Islands and owner of the ""Chanedra"", a cutter of 10 tons; entries on the verso record five different voyages made by this vessel during 1903, between the islands of Maré and Lifou in the Loyalties and Port Vila on Efate in the New Hebrides; with the relevant signatures, annotations and stamps of the local customs officials; light damp staining at one edge, original horizontal folds, complete.

Whilst still at high school, Dawn's interest in anthropology began, brought on by her access to a library of books on Papua New Guinea at the local RSL. Quarto (300 mm), author's cloth-backed illustrated wrappers with clear plastic cover; 38, [2], 3, [11] leaves, with b/w photographic illustrations, tables, maps; a fine copy; from The Papuan Collection of Charles Fletcher (Melbourne), his bookplate to the dedication leaf. Self-published - no doubt in very small numbers - this essay was originally produced as part requirement for a Masters Degree Qualifier, with the University of Papua New Guinea. The research was undertaken while Mackellar was Assistant District Commissioner, stationed at Menyamya. NLA holds the only copy in Australian libraries.

Small octavo (170 mm), black cloth limp covers (a few light marks) with stamped lettering to front, pp 510; a near fine copy; from The Papuan Collection of Charles Fletcher (Melbourne), his bookplate to the inside front cover. This is the first edition of the second translation of the New Testament into Motu, made by R. Lister-Turner and J. B. Clark. The first translation, prepared for the London Missionary Society by the Congregationalist missionary W. G. Lawes, was first published in 1891. Motu (sometimes called Pure Motu or True Motu to distinguish it from Hiri Motu) is a Central Papuan Tip language that is spoken by the Motuans, an indigenous ethnic group of Papua New Guinea centred around the Port Moresby region. Trove locates only one copy of the 1935 edition (SLNSW); a second edition was published in 1946.
