Description:
Leipzig und Züllichau: In der Frommannischen Buchhandlung, 1792. Achte Auflage. 8vo (222 × 131 mm), pp. [2], 612; printed in double columns; contemporary Etruscan-style binding of full speckled calf, lightly rubbed, central cartouches depicting Hygieia and Asclepius, block-printed endpapers, mottled edges, smooth spine gilt in compartments, green morocco lettering-pieces, both chipped (see images). In very good unsophisticated condition, suitable for exhibition and study. Preserved in a green cloth protective case. A highly interesting neoclassical binding of austere elegance by Georg Friedrich Krauss, of Vienna, no doubt influenced by the English examples of the day, and one of the earliest examples of his work known. Indeed, German or Austrian examples of this type are rare at this date: we know of only one other such binder who engaged in similar work, namely the University of Wurzburg binder Sebastian Vierheilig. In spite of his international fame, little is known of Krauss except: 1) he was… Read more

Description:
Argau, Switzerland: Jakob Diebold, 1823. Very Good. 4to. 48 pp. Pictorial wrappers, stitched as issued. Tables printed in black & red, lower page corners folded, some moderate edge wear, a bit of foxing or staining. Well worn but generally very good, with a few small tears along edges. An extremely scarce 1824 provincial Swiss Almanac, well illustrated with curious woodcuts including an elaborate title-page border in the neo-classical style, back cover depiction of the slaughter of the Greek patriarch, a double-page fold-out plate of a castle in Baden (small dirt stain at top), and twelve emblematic woodcuts depicting astrological attributes of each month. Owing to the fact that only one other copy seems to have survived, it is not surprising that we have been unable to locate reproductions of any of these woodcuts published elsewhere. The title-page woodcut appears to have been signed in the border the artist / engraved "Z. Morman." Several of the woodcut zodiac symbols are signed "Z." Jakob… Read more

Description:
London: Printed by assignment from the executors of E. Wicksteed for W. Bent, 1785. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo, pp. [6], ix, [1], 156; the first leaf consisting of an approbation on the recto and an engraved frontispiece on the verso; contemporary and probably original black goatskin with decorative gilt border and similar border outlining central panels on the covers, smooth gilt spine with winged cherub heads, a.e.g., green ribbon page maker; minor refurbishment at head and tail of spine. An attractive English binding, possibly made in Brighton (see below). * This edition is not listed ESTC or OCLC and is distinguished by the engraved frontispiece, on the verso the printed appeal by W. Bent dated 1785, warning the public of "surreptitious" counterfeit editions of the present work. Indeed, two similar (but not identical) editions are listed by ESTC; these are recorded in just one or two libraries each. Both editions are reproduced in "Eighteenth Century Collections Online" and ours represents an… Read more
