A good copy.

Complete with a wrapper that is in fair to good condition. Silver embossed lettering to the spine and small vignette to the front board. Some fading to the head of the spine (approx upper 2cm) and the tail of the spine (approx. lowest 2cm) where the wrapper is chipped. Also some fading to the head of the front and rear boads. A charming former owner's book plate (C.S. & F.E. Vartan) to the front paste-down. No other inscriptions. The text block remains very clean, tight sand well preserved. A book that somehow couldn't be more relevant at the time of listing with a war going on between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The text in English, modern Hebrew and Arabic supports a nujmber of photographic objects - each with its own story to tell about the conflict. No inscriptions. Scarce. The ISBN number is 0718118804, but it doesn't work in most of the searches. Light shelf wear to the card covers. A very good copy indeed.

Quarter cloth and paper covered boards. Also included is a period (circa 1920) facsimile of the first ever Observer broad sheet of Sunday, December 4, 1791 (now folded). Ink former owner's name and date to the front endpaper. A unique copy - signed in ink by all three of the editors (?) below a frontispiece illustration of the Editorial Room. J.L.Gavin, R.M. Barrington-Ward and Robert Bell have all signed it in neat black ink. Some scattered foxing. Rubbing to cloth at the head and tail of the spine with some light fraying. Several corners are bumped and rubbed.

A tear of 2 cm to the wrapper from the head of the spine, now repaired with acid free archival tape to the reverse of the wrapper. Slight shelf wear to the edges and the slightest of fading to the spine and front of the wrapper. A slight stain of a few mm to the rear end paper and paste down. A well preserved, near fine copy.

There is a preface to the second edition so its assumed they are from the second edition. This set contains volumes III, IV, VIII, IX, X, XI, XV, XVI. Gilt embossed design to the spines and tramlines to the boards. Marbled front and rear end papers, paste downs and fore edges. The front leather boards have become detached from all but volume III. Complete loss of the spine strip to volume VIII, X, and half of the leather spine strip loss to volumes IV, XI, and XVI. Back boards also detached to volumes IX and X. Rubbing to the edges of the boards and a few corners are lightly bumped. Some soiling to the upper fore edges. Despite their externally fair condition with their obvious flaws, internally these books have survived very well. Bound in quarter red leather with red hard boards. Four raised bands to the spine with gilt embossed designs between the bands and gilt embossed lettering to the spine. All edges gilt. Illustrated with numerous steel engravins with tissue guards. The leather at the head and tail of the spine are rubbed with a few niks to the cloth at the tail of the spine and associated fraying. Rubbing to the corners of the boards. Previous owners name, date and address to the reverse of the frontispiece plate with some rubbing to the head of the page, presumably from where a previous name has been rubbed out. Light stain to the front paste down. Loss of the front end paper and half title page.
