Illustrated with engraved vignettes by Harding. Hinges and corners neatly mended else a very good copy. The first part, "A Letter from an English Gentlemen Now Residing in China" has been attributed to Lord Chesterfield in the past but is now thought to be a treatise entirely composed by Robert Dodsley. First published in 1751, this edition is the first with Harding's fine engravings. ESTC T82506.

A fair copy only. Preserved in a custom clamshell case. Begins with a excerpt from Jefferson's Notes on Virginia and continues with sections on the effect of the atmosphere on electricity, vision and sound. "Looming" refers to distant objects sometimes appearing abnormally large, a phenomenon which Hopkins attributes to the affects of fog. First edition with Hopkins' name on the title. Also laid in is a large sample of paper from the De Schoolmeester mill in Holland. A double sheet of old watermark designs shows those designs in deep embossing for easy identification.
