Very good plus in light blue boards with minor spotting to spine and slight foxing to page edges and first three pages. Otherwise bright and clean with firm binding. In a very good plus dust jacket with following minor flaws but no major chips, tears or stains: slight wear at spine ends and corners; minor fading to pink on spine; light soiling to back panel; and a slight crease to the edge of the front flap. An excellent copy of this early science fiction novel which explores the theme of the Übermensch (Superman) in the character of John Wainwright, whose supernormal human mentality inevitably leads to conflict with normal human society. Quite scarce with all first state points.

Inscription on flyleaf appears to be in the author's hand and reads "Gift from (indecipherable) Praeger, February 14, 1948, Carmel, Cal." In a very good dust jacket (price intact) with some loss at spine ends and corners, and slight spotting to front panel. Praeger was an Irish writer and illustrator of children's books, but is perhaps best known for her sculptures.

In a very good dust jacket with mild wear to the extremities and some light staining to the reverse, only visible on the exterior at two small areas of the white flaps. Meets the first state requirement of 10 titles listed on rear jacket panel from "Horton Hears a Who!" to "Mulberry Street." Price is clipped but "$2.95" in pencil (faded and obviously old) is written below the clipped corner. This is virtually certain to mean the dust jacket is the first state, with the $2.50 price having been clipped by the bookseller and $2.95 (which was printed on the later second state dust jacket) added by them in pencil. A very attractive copy of the first edition.

Laid in is a four-page Editor's Note. Number 121 of a first printing of 1,000 sold to subscribers, of which half were eaten by rats while in storage in Normandy. The author, French poet and painter Marc Sabatier-Leveque, began writing this massive poem at the age of 14; he rewrote it when he was 22 and it was published in 1955 thanks to André Malraux. Illustrated with 16 portraits of the author by Pablo Picasso, who was the initiator of the subscription and said to the poet: "You are the one who brought French literature out of its Louis-Philippard style." Malraux, who considered this text to be "one of the major works of the 20th century," wrote to its young author: "You will be discovered in 30 years."
