Delamolliere. Hardcover. Lyon, 1792. Second edition of Mably's collected works. A very nice set in its original binding. 8vos, quarter gilt-decorated leather over marbled paper. A very sound set with excellent contents. Deaccessioned from a university library, with small unobtrusive stamps on front pastedowns. Some of Mably's most important works were published posthumously in the first edition of his collected works in 1789. His most known contribution is Entretiens de Phocion, a dialogue first published in 1763, which introduced themes of his mature thought. However, there are two works published posthumously which subsequently were to have a profound effect on the early deliberations on the assembly of the Estates-General of 1789 - an enlarged version of an earlier work (1765) 'Histoire de France' and 'Des droits et des devoirs du citoyen', written in 1758 but Mably held back the manuscript from publication and arranged for his executor to have it published after his death. Oeuvres badines [12 Volumes]

Caylus [Anne Claude Phillippe, Comte de]

  • Edition: First Edition
  • Book condition: Fine
  • Quantity available: 1
Visse. Hardcover. Amsterdam and Paris, 1787. 12 volumes. 8vo, 3/4 brown leather, spine gilt in six compartments. Half-titles, 1 engraved portrait by Delauney jeune after Cochin, 26 engraved plates, head and tail pieces. A near fine set with some scattered rubbing and foxing and a few margins stained. He encouraged artists whose reputations were still in the making, and befriended the connoisseur and collector of prints and drawings Pierre-Jean Mariette when Mariette was only twenty-two, but his patronage was somewhat capricious. Diderot expressed this fact in an epigram in his Salon of 1765: "La mort nous a delivre du plus cruel des amateurs."[1] Caylus had quite another side to his character. He had a thorough acquaintance with the gayest and most disreputable sides of Parisian life, and left a number of more or less witty stories dealing with it. These were collected (Amsterdam, 1787) as his Oeuvres badines completes. A lovely complete set, finely bound. . Fine. 1787. First Edition.
