Description:
Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Dobson.. 1797 One of three Philadelphia editions printed in the same year. Disbound. . Twelvemo. Very good. Purves (1734-1795) was a Universalist preacher who held an Arian position that Christ, with a pre-existent human soul, was first born of all creation. He was troubled by Joseph Priestley's writings on free will and the nature of the soul. In 1790 he came out with the book, Some Observations on Socinian Arguments, which attacks the ideas of Priestley and his followers. In the present work, he attacks Priestley more directly, and especially Priestley's 1777 book, The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity.

Description:
Amsterdam: Chez D. J. Changuion, 1770 First edition in French of Allgemeine Betrachtungen über die Triebe der Thiere (1760), one of the earliest texts on instinct theory. In what may be his most important work, Reimarus (1694-1768) discusses animal psychology and attempts to classify the instincts of animals. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines with burgundy and black labels, edges stained red. Two volumes, twelvemo. . Engraved title-page vignettes; titles printed in black and red. Half-titles preserved. Corners rubbed. A very good set. Reimarus studied philosophy and theology at Jena. His philosophical outlook was based upon the ideas of Christian Wolff, though he dissented from Wolff in his views of philosophical methodology, stressing the moral aim of philosophy. His best known work, Wolfenbuttel Fragments, was published posthumously by Lessing in 1777.

London: W. and J. Richardson for John Murray 1773 Second edition, enlarged, of an important sociological and anthropological study by John Millar (1735-1801), Professor of Law at the University of Glasgow and friend of Hume, Adam Smith and other members of the Scottish enlightenment. The first edition, in quarto format, appeeared two years earlier.. Contemporary polished calf. Gilt-ruled spine with red morocco label. Octavo. One inch split along front joint near head of spine. Offsetting to first and last couple of leaves from binding. Overall a very good, clean copy. The present work "contains a number of ingenious, progressive and penetrating ideas. It begins with the history of the station of women. Millar was by no means a primitivist, but he points out the equal and qualified station of women in primitive societies, thus making him a precursor of Bachofen. The advancement of civilization or the progress of labour and wealth, had formerly served to reduce the station of women, but since feudal… Read More

Oxford: At the Theatre Ann, 1673 Contemporary mottled calf, burgundy morocco spine label. . Twelvemo. Large engraving of the University arms on title-page, partly colored in a contemporary hand. With the errata leaf. Joints a bit worn. Armorial bookplate of genealogist and antiquary Evelyn Philip Shirley (1812-1882). A very good copy, clean and crisp. Obadiah Walker (1616-1699), a noted bibliophile, was the senior fellow and later the Master at University College, Oxford. Of Education is a distillation of his teaching experiences at Oxford. It was very popular, going to six editions by the turn of the century. Madan 2994 notes that "The first edition must have sold off well. The present edition is a reprint in a smaller size and type, with revisions and additions, and some ornaments. The last section of the whole book is a fair example of the changes.
