A very early English/French bilingual wording of the Canadian National Anthem, first performed in French in 1880 as "Chant National" in Quebec City. The French version here, uses Judge Routhier's original wording, while the English version uses Teschemacher's wording, with striking differences between the two. Musical score, folio (14 inches tall), pp. [2], 3-6, [7 - blank], [8], (publisher counts covers in pagination), lower cover with the musical short "Boys of the King" (1909) by Bingham and James. Victoria, BC: B. Jenkins. Photograph. Good. A nice early image of the first cemetery created for the sole use of Victoria's Chinese Canadian residents taken circa early to mid 1900s. An original gelatin silver print measuring 4-5/8 inches tall x 6-3/4 inches wide, mounted on card stock measuring 9 x 11 inches wide, signed at bottom right "BJ" and titled at bottom left "Chinese Cemetery. Victoria, B.C." with the photographers rubber-stamp verso "Photographed by B Jenkins Victoria, B.C.". Card stock with soil, stains and toning, print toned w. silver mirroring to edges. Image offers interesting details of the stone altar, the many still extant headstones looking out to sea and a Chinese pagoda not seen in later photos. Photo is mounted within a 12 x 14 inch wide card frame with "L. Stocks / Penticton, B.C." printed at lower right. Photo a touch faded, card mount with minor edge wear, verso blank. A nice Lumb Stocks photograph of Pentiction's 1942 Fire Department, originally formed in 1911.

An original 7 x 11 inch wide, sepia toned gelatin silver photograph, titled in negative "Penticton Fire Brigade / 1932" w. photographer's credit "L. Stocks" also in negative at lower right. Photo is mounted within a 10 x 14 inch wide card frame with "L. Stocks / Penticton, B.C." printed at lower right. Photo a touch faded, card mount with some minor soil and spotting, verso blank. This is the earliest Lumb Stocks photograph we were able to locate of Pentiction's nascent Fire Brigade, originally formed in 1911.

[Summerland, BC]: n.p., 1920. Photograph. Good. A circa 1920's, sepia toned, gelatin silver panoramic view photograph, measuring 3-3/8 x 14.5 inches wide, captioned in pencil on verso "Bennett's Gladiolus Field / Trout Creek Canyon / Summerland / Okanagan / B.C.". Irrigation pipes, fencing and a what appears to be a house on the near ridge, can all be seen near the middle and right-hand side of the photo. The photo has a vertical tear and crease near center and chips from corners. An uncommon image of a beautiful and productive looking agricultural area that may well now be part of a golf course. A local history titled "West Summerland Development : The Early Years 1890 to 1920" has a similar panoramic photo on p. 26 captioned "This area of West Summerland is called Paradise Flat, home to Bennett's Gladiola Farm in the late 1920s. The Flat overlooked Trout Creek Canyon (to the south)." However, their photo lacks most of the 3rd panel on the right side.

Green cloth over boards, title and decorations in black to top board and spine, 12mo (6-3/4 inches tall), pp. 102, B&W photos, stated fifth edition. Volume with edges rubbed, finger soil and p.o. name ffep. An early enviormental effort, pre-dating and laying some ground work for Rachel Carson's much later Silent Spring.

Spine ends and corners rubbed, shaken, gutter cracked at ffep. Ref. Russo p. 92.

Full green polished calf, decorations worked in gilt onto boards and spine, marbled edges and endpapers, sewn headbands, decorative prize label, signed by the principal, and dated 1888 is pasted onto front endpapers. Volume with rubs to corners and edges, tiny crack at top of upper joint, foxing to feps. A very solid copy. Trench also wrote "On some Deficiencies in our English Dictionaries" (1857), ..."which gave the first impulse to the great Oxford English Dictionary." Winchester (2004), p.39. Bound by the Relfe Brothers with their binder's stamp verso top front free endpaper.

Original B&W contact sheet press photo (4-1/4 inches tall x 2-1/8 inches wide) titled "Ilith Ramirez Sanchez / International terrorist, Carlos (CP Photo) 1-84 (ap)". Sides unevenly trimmed, else fine. A circa 1970's photo of 'Carlos The Jackal', known for his brazen attacks and elusive tactics. "For years, Carlos The Jackal was known only via a handful of hazy black-and-white photos. [this being one of them] But the fall of Communism in 1989 spelled the end of his career, and Ramirez fled to Sudan, where he was captured by French agents [who] whisked him out of Sudan in a sack... the flamboyant terrorist and self-proclaimed revolutionary once one of the Cold War's most wanted men [has] been jailed since 1994." New Westminster, BC: The British Columbian Newspaper, 1954. Loose Archive. Very Good or Better. An interesting look at the start of a young artist's career, with five original 8x10 promotional photos [one a composite w. the artist's cartoon characters], the 1953 copyright registration certificate, three ARCs (Advance Reading Copies) of his comic strip "Bobby of the Comics" and a 1954 broadside offprint of the newspaper article announcing the publication of "Bobby of the Comics" in The British Columbian newspaper. All items are in very good or better condition w. one ARC copy lacking the final leaf and having the artist's name and mailing address typed at the foot of p. 1, the broadside with folds and edge wear. The photographer Glenn Baglo, whose "GLENN BAGLO PHOTO" rubber stamp is on the verso of the later photo of Steven's, is well known for his documentary photographs of the hippie-rich environment of Vancouver in the 1970's.
