Description:
London: T. Payne and Son, 1777. Fourth edition (257 pp.). Tall octavo, contemporary decorative calf with remnants of gilt decoration; marbled epps (remnant of bookplates); hinges starting but holding, corners worn. As illustrations, Whately has chosen various garden features from Wotton, Blenheim, Tinturn Abbey, Painshill, Stowe, and Moore Park among others. These examples are produced in support of a largely analytic description of the elements of a garden (Trees are separated into different types by their different shapes, shades of green, and growths). ‘Gardens’ here are more properly pleasure gardens and the design principles bear on landscapes. An early, influential treatment of landscape design by Thomas Jeffereson’s favourite gardener. A clean, attractive copy.

Description:

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1808. Third edition, in two volumes (xxviii, 221; viii, 195, adverts). Illustrated with nearly forty aquatints by Alkin after pen and ink sketches by Gilpin. Not a matched set: Volume I (23cm) in contemporary half morocco over marbled paper, gilt decoration to spine; Volume II (23.5cm) in new brown cloth over complimentary marbled paper. Both bear the stamp of the Boston Public Library on the title page and in the margins of the aquatints. The text and plates are, however, especially clean and bright throughout the two volumes. The contents are useful and attractive sources for investigators of the aesthetic of the picturesque who will discover, for example, that many of Gilpinā€™s drawings and the aquatints which issued from them were, shall we say, generic representations of actual scenes. One would have been hard pressed to identify them from Gilpinā€™s portrayals of them.Ā  Two useful, if unmatched, volumes.

Although first published in 1757 (Our edition was preceded in the same year by a single volume quarto edition), according to FussellĀ  Lisleā€™s ms. had lain dormant for perhaps thirty years before his son Thomas decided to issue an edition of his fatherā€™s carefully notedĀ  private account ofĀ  the most successful farming practices of his time, the artful application of the findings of new science to traditional farming practice. Fussell quotes Donaldson approvingly, ā€œLisle was a very superior person, and promoted the art of agriculture.... He collected the best ways and put them forth to be imitatedā€ (Agricultural Biography). Edward Lisle (1666- 1722) was a landowner with holdings in Wiltshire, on the Isle of Wight, and at Crux Easton in… Read more
