Moscow, Zerna, 1916. . Limited edition, one of 25 copies on Japon de 'Shidzouka', from a total edition of 685, signed by Lebedev; folio (39 x 28 cm); illustrated and engraved entirely by Lebedev, lettrines coloured by hand; stitched in the original self-wrappers, some age toning to margin of upper cover, otherwise a very good copy. One of only 25 copies on Japon. Signed by the illustrator. This impressive production was a collaboration between two Russian Ă©migrĂ©s based in Paris (specifically Montparnasse) at that time – the artist and illustrator Ivan Lebedev (1884 – 1972) and the writer Ilya Ehrenburg (1891 – 1967). This was one of Ehrenburg's earliest published works. The Three Knights and the Shirt was originally a fabliau written by Jacques de Baisieux, a French-language poet and troubadour of the late thirteenth century. Short narratives in verse between 300 and 400 lines long, fabliaux were written by jongleurs in Northeast France between 1150 and 1400 and went on to feature in and… Read More

Circa 1935. . Silver gelatin print, mounted, framed and glazed, captioned below image on mount. Image size: 211 x 287 mm; framed: 282 x 349 mm. pont Classic Ponting photograph from Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1910-1913), showing Capt. Oates with the Manchurian ponies, which had been purchased by Meares, a canine rather than an equine expert. Oates considered the ponies unfit for purpose, and insufficiently provisioned for and so he bought two extra tons of fodder with his own money to feed them, however two of the nineteen ponies were killed in a violent storm two days after the Terra Nova left New Zealand. Photograph taken March 28th, 1911.The Terra Nova expedition was supposed to be the high-water mark of the Golden Age of Antarctic exploration; led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the expedition was to have been the first to reach the South Pole, marking the event with the planting of the Union Jack flag. However the more professionally equipped Norwegian expedition led by Roald… Read More

London, Alfred W. Bennett, 1866. . First edition. 4to, 28 original albumen prints, including frontispiece and title vignette, double-page map of the Oberland, tissue guards, modern dark blue half morocco gilt, marbled sides, original gilt pictorial upper cover bound-in at end, all edges gilt, a fine copy. A fine example of this extremely beautiful and important work on the Swiss Alps and its Glaciers. It is one of the earliest of its kind to be illustrated with original photographs. George, editor of the Alpine Journal and a noted historian, was one of the English pioneers of the Golden Age of mountaineering. He was a friend of Tyndall and made the first ascent of the Great Viescherhorn as well as the first ascent of the Jungfrau from the side of the Wengeralp. The photographer was Ernest Edwards, a noted portraitist of his day and 'considered to be the best of the early amateur Alpine photographers'. He added a seven-page report 'Notes by the Photographer' which contains information about the… Read More

Description:
Paris, Charpentier, 1840. . 12mo. Half-title with advertisements on verso. Contemporary green sheep by Khi of Moscow 1843 (signed & dated in gilt to binding margin), elaborate gilt ornaments to boards and spine, moire endpapers, green silk bookmark, gilt edges. Fine copy of new edition, revised and corrected, with a foreword by George Sand. Echoing much of the sentiment of Rousseau's Reveries of a Solitary Walker, Senancour's themes of disillusionment and hopelessness in the face of modern, changing Europe and increasing industrialisation were not initially appreciated, but went on to find considerable success in the 1830s once championed by the Romantic authors of that period. George Sand was a key supporter of the work, identifying in it the essential evolution of the romantic hero in fiction, and the work was compared favourably to Chateaubriand's René. Vicaire VII, 473.

Heavily modified, the poet's revolutionary sentiments were not accepted by the Imperial censor, who requested the original title The Thirteenth Apostle be changed. Despite not being the complete version, the text was incredibly popular and Mayakovsky wrote in his introduction to a later edition that the text is 'a catechism for contemporary art'. The work is dedicated to his muse Lilya Brik, wife of his publisher and life-long friend Osip Brik. Mayakovsky was not discrete with his admiration for Lilya and the two had a passionate affair lasting six years. This issue was for many years believed to be the first produced by Walpole due to the superior quality of the paper, the misspelling 'Illissus' (p.8, Ode II, 3, line 3), and the missing comma after 'Swarm' (Ode II, 2, line 7).
