Attractively (and very sturdily) bound in contemporary red quarter morocco over glazed red boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, all original wrappers bound in (sic!) -- Ad 2: 183 pp. With 43 illustrations in the text. Original publisher's orange cloth. Original edition. B.H. Breslauer copy of the justly famous catalogue of the vast collection of ornamental books and prints of the Kunstbibliothek Berlin, at one time the most comprehensive in existence in the field of decorative art and architecture. It comprised printed material from the late 15th to the early 19th century. The collection was based upon that of Hippolyte Destailleur, the great connoisseur, which was acquired in 1879, to which was added the extraordinary holdings of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and Kupferstichkabinett. The catalogue is a model of its kind, with complete descriptions and plate counts (often… Read more

Description:
Paris: Didot jeune, 1796. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. 8 volumes in 7. With a frontispiece portrait by Saint Aubin in vol. 1 and another frontispiece portrait of the author (unsigned) in vol. 5. Traces of minor wear to bindings, some faint foxing. BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY FULL RED MOROCCO BY BOZERIAN, signed at the foot of the spine on vol. 1 "Rel. p[ar] Bozerien." The A.A. Renouard copy, bound by Bozerian, cited by Cohen-De Ricci, who described this set as "bel exemplaire... relie en 7 vol., maroquin rouge de Bozerian." The Emmanuel Martin sale catalogue (1877) describes this set as one of only four copies on "grand papier jesus velin." PROVENANCE: A.A. Renouard (sale 1854, lot 2462) -- Emmanuel Martin (sale 1877, lot 578). Both the Renouard and Martin sale catalogues state that this copy contained an original drawing of Nivernais by Saint Aubin, now no longer present (perhaps it was once pasted onto the first blank leaf, as something seems to have been removed from it). Cohen-De… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez Serviere, 1795. Very good. Complete set of 5 vols. 8vo. Contemporary French marbled calf, smooth spines gilt, red morocco labels (bindings refurbished, vol. 1 rebacked with original spine laid down). Collation: [2], viii, 416; 462; 506; 446; 487 pp. This copy does not contain the portrait which is cited on the title-page but was clearly never bound herein (not all copies contain it), and thus is priced accordingly. This five-volume set is of particular interest owing to the fact that the publisher's printed spine labels were not discarded by the binder, but were inexplicably retained, and were bound in at the end of vol. 2. While such survivals do occur in one- or two-volume sets, they are rarely found as here. Political and Social Radicalism anticipating the French Revolution. "Helvetius deserves our attention because he is one of the most important connecting links between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, and particularly because he was the most widely read Mason. Description:
Madrid, 1790. Peter Marin. Small 4to. 224 pp. Bound in contemporary horsehide (?) -- on covers a flower tool has been impressed in gold to form a cross, in the outer edges a rope-work roll, at the corners the same flower tool, four raised bands on spine, in the compartments impressions in gold of the same flower tool; two pair of original catches and clasps affixed by nails (one indistinguishable replacement), all edges gilt, around edges of the textblock are 11 impressions of a 6-pointed star. Minor wear to binding, text clean and crisp. Preserved in a cloth box. FEASTS AND FESTIVALS in Toledo. It was suggested to us that this book was bound in Columbia, South America, where it had been (beautifully) preserved located since Colonial times. Be that as it may, the front and back pastedowns consist of printed Spanish Revenue Stamped paper: "Quarenta Maravedis / Sello Quarto, Quarenta Maravedis, Ano de Mil y Ochocientos Siete" (1806). Such documents would have been valid for one year only in Spain,… Read more

Description:
Amsterdam: By de weduwe van Joannes van Someren, de erfgenaamen van Joannes van Dyk, Hendrik en de weduwe van Dirk Boom, 1690. Hardcover. Very good. Broadside, 305 x 470 (visible image size), professionally matted and framed. An extraordinary 17th-century anatomical engraving, justly celebrated by anatomists and artists alike for over 300 years; the Surrealists found it particularly fascinating. "This stark dissection -- with ragged flesh fully displayed and hands bound with a cord -- signals a commitment to a higher level of realism. To our eyes, the picture may suggest a distressing indifference to, or even pleasure in, human suffering" (Dream Anatomy, National Library of Medicine, 2003). "Govard Bidloo was born in Amsterdam in 1649 and became professor of anatomy at The Hague from 1688 to 1694, when he took the same position at Leyden. He was later appointed the physician of William III of England, who was originally Dutch, until the King's death in 1702. In that year, Bidloo returned to… Read more
