T. Cadell, London., 1776. Sixth edition. pp [viii], 132. Includes an Appendix and Postscript on the state of the British economy. Recently rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards. A book which went very quickly into numerous editions and so impressed the members of the United States Congress that they invited the author to assist in regulating its finances. He held that ideas of right and wrong were unsusceptible to analysis, being immediately clear to intuitive reason. His later support for the republicans of revolutionary France made him a particular target for excoriation by Edmund Burke. In 1791 he helped to found the Unitarian Society.Very good indeed.

Privately printed from subscribers only by Chas. J. Sawyer, London., 1924. First edition. Edited with an Introduction, Fresh Explanatory Notes and Terminal Essay, by N.M. Penzer. Foreword by Charles Carnac Temple. Royal octavo. Ten volumes. One of 1500 numbered sets. Full black gilt decorated buckram. Top edges gilt. Gilt endpapers. An 11th-century collection of Indian legends, fairy tales and folk tales as retold, in Sanskrit, by a Shaiva monk named Somadeva who took much of his material from earlier sources. The work was originally in verse but is here rendered in prose. It remains the only complete edition in English. The first Tawney translation appeared in 1880-4 but this edition has been greatly expanded. A monumental work, which bears a striking resemblance to European mediaeval fairy tales, it served as a model for Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990). Cloth at spine of one of the volumes just a little bubbled. Some light spotting of prelims and edges. A very good set indeed.
