Fine engraved headpiece (repeated three times) depicting a scientist in his laboratory & 53 folding engraved plates. xx, 38, 124 pp.; vi, 78, 27 pp. Two vols. in one. Large 4to, cont. polished calf (corners very carefully repaired), spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Paris: Briasson, 1754-55. Second edition, greatly enlarged, of the first French book on microscopy (1st ed.: 1718 with the title Descriptions and only 34 plates). Joblot (1645-1723), professor of mathematics at the Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts, probably became interested in microscopy during the visit of Huygens and Hartsoeker to Paris in 1678 when they demonstrated microscopes brought from Holland. While Joblot's observations were largely limited to protozoa in the first edition, the second edition reflects his study of minerals, plant cross-sections, and insects, illustrated on the plates in the first volume. The charming headpiece, repeated three times, depicts a scientist in his laboratory, surrounded ... Read more

London: J. Brindley, 1728. First edition; an extraordinary "illuminated" copy with the title-page, initials, and section headings all heightened in gold, and bound by John Brindley, bookbinder to Frederick, Prince of Wales and Queen Caroline. This remarkable book, with all the decorations contemporary, comes from the library at Marble Hill House, the Palladian villa constructed 1724-29 at Twickenham which was built by Henrietta Howard (ca. 1688-1767), coun ... Fine frontis. port. of the author. xvi, 450, [2] pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, cont. calf, double gilt fillet round sides, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by J. Hughs, 1757. First edition, and a lovely copy, of one of the 18th-century classics of English husbandry. Lisle (1666?-1722), who lived at Crux-Easton in Hampshire and had estates in Wiltshire and in the Isle of Wight, assiduously gathered information from the leading farmers of all aspects of husbandry. While not an innovator but an intelligent and careful observer, he later added comments based on his own experience. Thomas Lisle, the author's son, reworked his father's materials and, using them, published the present work. Some of the chapter headings include plowing, sowing, manuring, pastures, the garden, water and waters, etc. There is an interesting chapter on the varieties of ploughs and Lisle has provided a two-page glossary of technical terms. The handsome frontispiece portrait of Lisle, framed b ... Read more

4 p.l. (4th leaf a blank), 58 leaves. 4to, 17th cent. calf (neatly rebacked & recornered), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: T. Berthelet, 1540. An early Tudor translation of an important early medical work on the curative properties of the American wood known as "guaiacum," a text first published in Latin in 1519 as De Guaiaci Medicina et Morbo Gallico by the German scholar, poet and reformation thinker Ulrich von Hutten (1488-1523). Hutten's treatise, which was quickly translated into several languages, popularized the use of guaiacum to treat several conditions, especially the scourge of syphilis, and accelerated the importation of this medicinal agent from the Caribbean. Indeed, the work likely convinced the Fugger banking family of Augsburg to seek a monopoly on the import of the drug from the Americas, a concession they later secured from the Spanish crown in exchange for a loan. In this work, Hutten gives a full account of the appearance of syphilis in ... Read more

1 p.l., 53 pp. Large 4to, orig. blue wrappers, uncut. London: J. Smith, 1826. A remarkable association copy of this extremely rare offprint, linking two of the greatest scientists of the 19th century, and pre-figuring Babbage's later work on his difference and analytical engines. This copy bears the following inscription on the title-page in Babbage's hand: "To M. Gauss from the Author." Additionally, Babbage has written on the upper wrapper: "M. Gauss. Influence of Signs. 3. Ch. Babbage. On the influence of signs in mathematical reasoning." Babbage here presents his views on the importance of symbolic notation in mathematical reasoning. He argues that algebraic symbolism enables one to express ideas more briefly and precisely than in ordinary language; it enables one to consider problems in great generality, rather than only in special cases; and it often enables one to consider simultaneously different cases of a problem that would otherwise be treated separately. Venice: Aldus Manutius, July 1498. First edition, and the first collected edition of a contemporary author. Poliziano (1454-94), "was a private tutor to the sons of Lorenzo de' Medici before becoming professor of Greek and Latin at Florence. Although not a classical author, Poliziano was nonetheless admired by Aldus for the elegance of his writing, and this publication may have been intended to serve as a model of elegant Latin and Greek composition. The books' format is royal folio, uniquely so among Aldine folios, substantially taller and squarer than the customary elongated super-chancery size that Aldus ... Read more
