Pictorial covers, backed in red cloth. 12 pages, all stiff printed boards, with all variety of natural and household objects for children to identify. Objects listed by name, by page, on inside rear cover. Edges heavily worn, some loss to cloth on spine that is discolored, interiors much nicer.

Large 4to, black cloth, gilt-stamped titles front and spine in pictorial dustjacket (artist's self-portrait) , 59 pages of text (artist chronology, lists of plates by medium, etc) followed by plates for 91 paintings and drawings, 28 lithographs and 12 engravings. (18 plates in colo, the rest duotone). The book itself is near fine. Sun faded at head of spine where the dustjacket is chipped, internals quite nice. Dustjacket is tanned, and has some closed tears and showing some loss mostly at spine ends.

Laid-in is TNS (stamped postacard) from Cook to the manager of the bookshop dated Aug 17, 1981 how to obtain scripts for the show.

Uncommon pair of Lucas' companion volumes of stories of old: OLD FASHIONED TALES (1905) and its follow-up FORGOTTEN TALES OF LONG AGO (1906), both uniform in design and format with elaborate decorated covers by F.D. Bedford, who also illustrated both. The first volume is navy blue and gilt on grey linen, the second yellow, orange, gold and black on cream cloth, both unusually well preserved. The second volume has a short tear in cloth head of spine, but the rare dustjacket, albeit worn and with careful, archival taped repairs on its verso. The separated pieces of the dustjacket for the first volume are laid-in. Same library bookplate on pastedown in both.

Presumed first issue of Vol II with "Boz" (not Dickens) identified as author on title page. First issue of volume III with "pilaster" instead of "pier" or "pedestal" on page 164. Spines slightly cocked, and front hinge revealed in volumes I and III. Some loss at spine ends. One plate in Vol I sprung. All collate as required. An unsophisticated trio showing its natural, uniform age.
