Description:
Limited to 500 copies in English, of which this is number 199. The book was also published in German and Italian. This bibliography and history of the press covers the years 1923 to 1929. The first section describes how a book is made at the press and is accompanied by 12 woodcuts by Frans Masereel. This is followed by descriptions of the books and occasional publications and a look at the various printer's devices used. The book descriptions are most often accompanied by tipped in facsimiles of pages of the books printed on the hand-press on hand-made paper.The pages of the book are printed in Bodoni's original types on Lafuma rag paper. The book is in near fine condition, except for wear at the head and tail of the spine and some bruising of the text block at the top near the headband. Interior of the book is in fine condition. The book has 71 pages, three fold-out sections. The text is printed on white hand-made Fabriano Umbria paper in black ink with headings printed in five colors and the three fold-out sections are printed on different pastel shades of MacGregor-Vinzani specially made for this edition. The various cutouts and collages are in different colors as well. Michael Alpert printed the book, created and constructed all the various components of the book itself and its binding. The book is bound in a hand made paper wrappper and then inserted into a binding made of paper by MacGregor-Vinzani. The book is then placed in a cloth covered clamshell box with a paper spine label. A beautiful edition of the poet's favorite work which is superbly interpreted by the symbolic lithographs of John Biggers.
Japanese linen with embossed color lettering on front, Japanese linen-covered clamshell box with embossed color lettering on front. The paper was specially blended for this edition, and the binding cloth is dyed the color of Georgia clay. One of an edition limited to 400 numbered copies signed by the author and the artist John Biggers. Book is as new, the solander box is fine with a slight bump to a corner on the front of the box. Not in LEC Bibliography, see History LEC pp. 233, 235.
