The scroll is attached to a dowel that is inserted into a 1 x 1-inch wooden squares between which is a box enclosed with marbled boards, the scroll is returned to the box by turning the dowel; binding square and tight, some creases to the scroll. Porter Garnett was an assistant curator at the Bancroft Library at the University of California from 1907 to 1912. With Gelett Burgess, Garnett was co-founder of The Lark (1895), and in 1922 became professor of graphic arts at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, where he founded the Laboratory Press.
