Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1968. Second Printing. Hardcover. VERY GOOD IN VERY GOOD DJ. Large folding map which includes Northern Texas. 7 illus., 298pp., index, bibliography. Owner's stamp otherwise fine in bright, price clipped dust jacket. Excellent edition of rare 19thc. publications with useful annotations. Related to the 35th parallel his expedition and the new trail they created provided a route for an increasing number of covered-wagon caravans. Whipple's "itinerary" remains one of the most interesting, authoritative and human journals on the Southwest, as it was before settlement. This annotated journal is a fitting tribute to the distinctive service which the officers and men of the American Army- Whipple, March, Fremont, and others rendered the U.S. in welding a western empire to the Union.
