Recent brown three quarter leather bindings with five raised bands at spine, burgundy title patch with gold embossed titling, gold lines offsetting bands, decorative stamp in each compartment without titling, blind embossed borders to front and rear boards. London: Taylor and Francis, 1893. First Edition. Three Quarter Leather. Good. Joseph J. Thomson's (1856-1940) paper describing the physics of droplet formation published three years before Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (1869-1959) published this first paper on the cloud chamber which he is credited with inventing and resulted in his 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics. Thomson's work on the conductivity of electricity through gases led to his winning of the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics. Thomson also served as Wilson's academic advisor at Cambridge. vii, [1], 556 pp. 8vo. 9 plates, all folding. Original three quarter leather binding with gold lines and titling to spine, call number at base of spine in white ink indicates ex-library. Considerable wear and scuffing to the covers, losses at head and foot of spine and corners of boards, spine leather has separated from front board at hinge, cover still tight to text block.

This is copy #45 of the numbered edition. Inscribed by Guy Williams (1933-2004) on the first free endpaper to legendary American sculptor Louise Nevelson (1899-1988). Williams was a modern artist and teacher based on the West Coast who used a variety of media in the course of his career. A very rare volume, even moreso with the inscription to Nevelson. Unpag. 4to. Scuffing and light soiling to cover wraps. Front cover beginning to pull away slightly from text block. Text of poems and observations of the artist that supplement the three signed, tipped in plates, each having the Hollander watermark and signed by Williams in pencil with tissue guards intact.
