[Bremerton, WA]: N.p., 1929-1937. Original oblong folio album (13 x 10 1/2 inches) of black faux morocco containing approximately 325 photographs and real photo postcards showing the mountaineering adventures and other outdoor activities of Bremerton, Washington residents Helen M. Some photos are detached and laid into the album. Most of the photographs are captioned and the captions get longer towards the end. There are some sections that have group captions as well. A fascinating album detailing various ascents in the US and Canada. Helen and Gus were active members of The Mountaineers (a Seattle-based outdoors club founded in 1906) who spent much of their leisure time hiking and climbing. Dating when the album begins in 1929, the pair were married in November, 1934. Most of the album covers the time prior to… Read More

Description:
Sea Breezee, FL: N.p, [1912]. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring 9 1/4 x 3 inches. Caption within the plate read "Hotel Clarendon Clarendon Airship Photo by LeSesne." In it we can see the hotel with the pusher biplane in front of it on the sand with people and cars surrounding it. Ruth Law was the pilot. Old crease (hard to see). Framed and glazed. Very good. Ruth Law enrolled in Burgess Flying School in Boston in late June of 1912 and made her first solo flight on August 1st. After receiving her pilot's license she took a job with the Clarendon Hotel for the Winter of 1912. There she made daily exhibition flights and carried tourists for brief flights. By the summer of 1913 she had her own plane and signed up for the same kind of employment at a Newport Rhode Island resort. The photographer, Richard LeSesne, was mainly noted for his photography of land speed record attempts on Daytona Beach, Florida, in the 1920s and 1930s (although he was active as early as 1897).

Description:
Powell [WY]: Southern Montana Oil Company., 1917. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring measuring 39 x 10 inches, caption in the plate in white. Small stain to the blank upper margin else very good. First of all we have to love this photograph for having a man with his arms outspread placed in the very middle of the image. It bespeaks a person very exalted to be present in a deserted and beautiful landscape. Southern Montana Oil Company incorporated on October 30, 1916, and had established offices in Missoula, Montana, by 1917. All of its directors came from Anaconda, a region known for its copper deposits. The directors (I.W. Walker, A.F. Mavity, R.A. Cobban, F. Shannon, and T.P. Stewart) decided to pursue petroleum riches in southern Wyoming. By April 1917, the new exploration company was drilling wells in the Elk Basin oilfield, which crosses the state line between Carbon County (Montana) and Park County (Wyoming). The giant Elk Basin field has a dramatic history of its own, as noted in… Read More

Caernarvon: H. Humphries, 1852. Second edition, revised. Octavo 11. [1, ads] ] pp. plus the large folding panorama bound in at the beginning. Publisher's blue printed wrappers. Spine starting, minor dust soiling. Very good. The panorama is formed of twelve panels and each notable location in the Eyri Hills is described underneath. Although protected as the Eyri National Park in Wales the area is still redolent with history. A few examples of historical and mythological sites in the Eyri Hills; Yr Wyddfa's name likely comes from the word 'Gwyddfa', another word for 'grave' or 'burial-ground'. The summit of Yr Wyddfa is said to be where the medieval Welsh king Rhita Gawr was buried after a fierce battle with King Arthur. The medieval masterpiece, the Mabinogi, is one of Britain's earliest examples of prose. Some of the best-known stories of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi are set within the National Park's boundaries, including 'Branwen ferch Llyr' and 'Math fab Mathonwy'. Some fold rears and a few ships but a nice assemblage. Though it has all but disappeared, pegeon racing used to be an immensely populat in the early 20th century. Pigeon racing has been described as the "sport with a single starting gate and a thousand finish lines." Cmpeting birds are taken from their lofts and must race home. The time taken and distance are recorded and the fastest bird is declared the winner. Races are generally between 100 kilometres (62 mi) and 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) in distance. In the United States flights of up to 1,800 kilometres (1,100 mi) have been recorded Provided it survives the many hazards associated with racing, a single pigeon could compete from about six months of age and still be in competition at… Read More
