Caric, in quoting The Paupers as an example in its entirety, suggests that pre-Civil War songs lost the character of men "as demonstrating their independence and good heartedness in the face of dangerous forces" rather "The Paupers represents dependence and degradation as the norm and independent men . . . as being dragged down to the lowest level of the social order. Independence, honor, and respectability were still portrayed as the dominant values, but 'the Paupers' referred to these values primarily to demonstrate their unattainability." Bretherton's wife to the wife of Kenneth Grahame on the flyleaf. Bretherton was a frequent contributor to Punch magazine and an enthusiastic support of Grahame. Poems was published after the death of both Bretherton and Grahame, hence the inscription to/from their respective spouses.

About very good in publisher's dark red cloth with bumping and wear to edges and spine, paper spine label present but with loss, spine lean, front hinge starting, but nevertheless a desirable copy with excellent association.. Inscribed presentation copy from Morris to Ford Madox Brown, dated December 1888. An exceptional Pre-Raphaelite association. Brown was a British painter closely aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an "old and intimate" friend of Morris, and a founding partner of Morris's design company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. This copy was also owned by, and has the bookplate and ownership inscription of, American painter and collector Hamilton Easter Field who appears to have acquired it in 1894, the year after Brown's death. 8vo. Adshead argued, influentially, that what Dickens had written in his American Notes (1842) on the "Pennsylvania [prison] system" was fiction, and could not be taken seriously as commentary.
