Date inferred from text, leaf [7]. A modest production, very scarce: This work was unknown to Patti Smith herself until she saw this copy in Princeton on 28 May 2005, and SIGNED it in black ink on page [1] lower left. --Collation: 280 x 216 mm: Ten leaves, foliated [1-10] (ie, not foliated). Paris: Librairie Vanier, 1885   ¶ FIRST EDITION of Verlaine's autobiographical sketch for Léon Vanier's series Les hommes d'aujourd'hui (1876-99), which was sort of the Biography Channel of its day. The text is greatly enriched here by Cohl's full-page caricature of Verlaine as a scowling imp, crouching and strumming a lyre while his left hand grasps an arrow shot through a heart: The Greek word anágke ("need", "anguish", "distress") is inscribed on his forehead, and his tail--which seems a bit too low--is labelled "DÉCADENCE". His books are stacked up behind him. Another example of the same poster is preserved in the Cooper-Hewitt museum, New York.   ||| Poster 800 x 597 mm (31½ x 23½ inches) offset-lithographed in colors with color halftone, green-halftone margins.
