Dublin, 19 October 1891. 6½ x 8½ inches, folds, in good condition. The uncommon signature of ‘Eddie’, Albert Victor Christian Edward, Duke of Clarence (1864-1892), first son of Edward, Prince of Wales, and grandson of Queen Victoria. Fabricated rumours about him included a connection with the Jack the Ripper murders, and an association with the Cleveland Street scandal. Just as plans for both his marriage to Princess Mary of Teck and his appointment as Viceroy of Ireland were under discussion, Albert Victor fell ill with influenza in the pandemic of 1889–92. He developed pneumonia and died at Sandringham House in Norfolk on 14 January 1892, less than a week after his 28th birthday.

Dated in another hand in pencil: Calcutta, 7 December 1813. 4 x 4 inches, in good condition. Francis Rawdon-Hastings (1754-1826), 1st Marquis of Hastings, 2nd Earl of Moira, served with distinction in the American War of Independence, and became Governor General of India in 1813. His campaigns against the Mahrattas helped to establish the supremacy of British power throughout India. He purchased Singapore Island in 1819.

1 July 1620. Neat manuscript in English, 12 x 9 inches, trimmed, laid down, paper defects at right edge with loss of some letters, light stains. William Cranstoun, 1st Lord Cranstoun (died June 1627), a Scot who played a prominent part in the pacification of the Anglo-Scottish border in the early 17th century. King James appointed Cranstoun to the position of Captain of the Horse Garrison, or King's Guard, under the Earl of Dunbar, Lieutenant of the Borders. In 1605 he was keeper of Lochmaben Castle and a deputy-lieutenant of the Borders. Sir John Balfour Paul's The Scots Peerage records of him that: "He was a man of singular energy and fearlessness, and though his relentless rule on the Borders of necessity made him many enemies, yet his persistence therein brought back that region to a state of law and order such as it had not known for many years, and from which it never really again lapsed.

Royal Geographical Society, London, 28 November 1853. 3½ x 4½ inches, lightly mounted on part album page. HMS Blossom was an 18-gun Cormorant-class sloop-of-war. She was built in 1806 and is best known for the 1825–1828 expedition under Captain Beechey to the Pacific Ocean, during which Beechey visited Pitcairn Island. Frederick William Beechey (1796-1856), naval officer and explorer. In 1818 he served under Lieutenant (afterwards Sir) John Franklin in David Buchan's Arctic expedition, of which at a later period he published a narrative. In the following year he accompanied Lieutenant W. E. Parry in HMS Hecla. In 1825, Beechey was appointed to command the HMS Blossom. His task was to explore the Bering Strait in concert with Franklin and Parry operating from the east. The whole voyage lasted more than three years and in the course of it Beechey discovered several islands in the Pacific. 26 August 1751. In French. 1 page 8 x 5½ inches, integral blank, in good condition. Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721–1794), French statesman, lawyer and defender of King Louis XVI. He was Directeur de la Librairie, 1750-1763. in December 1792, he undertook the defence of the king before the Convention, and it was his painful task to break the news of his condemnation to the king. In December 1793 he was arrested with his daughter, his son-in-law, and his grandchildren, imprisoned in the Prison Port-Libre, and on the 23 April 1794 he was guillotined in Paris.

The Office of Ordnance, 4 December 1769. 15 x 9½ inches, wafer seal affixed, integral blank leaf, horizontal folds, a few minor tears at folds, creases, etc. A handsome and uncommon Ordnance document. John Manners (1721-1770), Marquis of Granby, served in Cumberland’s army against the Young Pretender. He became the commander in chief of the British contingent in Germany during the Seven Years’ War (from 1759); commander in chief of the forces, 1766.

1783. 4 x 6 inches, very lightly tipped on to an album page with an engraved portrait of De Lolme and a biography. Jean-Louis de Lolme (1740 – 1806), Swiss and British political theorist and writer on constitutional matters, born in Geneva. As an adult he moved to England, and became a British subject. His most famous work was Constitution de l'Angleterre (The Constitution of England, 1771), which was subsequently published in English as well. In it, de Lolme advocated a constitutional form of government enshrining the principle that monarchy, aristocracy and democracy should be balanced against each other. He also praised the element of representative democracy in the constitution, and urged an extension of suffrage. The work influenced many of the framers of the United States Constitution.

Admiralty, 28 March 1807. 1 page 12½ x 8 inches, integral blank leat, in good condition. Careful instructions to motivate naval officers in the transport of public treasure. Admiral Sir Harry Burrard Neale (1765-1840) was at the capture of Charlestown in April 1780. He served throughout the Napoleonic Wars, and was commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean from 1823 to 1826. Lord William Russell (1767-1840), Whig politician murdered in his sleep by his valet.

At his Majesties Castle of Dublin, 8 July 1682. 17 x 11½ inches, the Earl’s wafer seal affixed, minor tears, stains and defects, lower left corner torn away. From the Enys Collection. An impressive Irish Warrant or Commission. Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Arran, Baron Butler of Cloughgrenan, Viscount Tullough (1639 – 1686), Irish peer, the fourth son of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde. He was created Baron Butler of Cloughgrennan, Viscount Tulloogh and Earl of Arran (having purchased the Aran islands) in May 1662 in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1673, as a reward for his bravery in the sea fights against the Dutch, he was created Baron Butler of Weston in the Peerage of England.

Sir Edward Fitzgerald Campbell (1822-1882) served with distinction in the Punjab Campaign of 1848-49, was at the siege of Multan and at Gujarat. Campbell was at the Siege of Delhi, 1857, and became Military Secretary to Lord Canning when Governor-General, 1857-61. Another letter from the same correpondence, formerly in our stock, was dated from Calcutta in April 1852.
