Description:

London: John Murray, 1869. First edition, in two volumes (pp. xxxii, 644, index) with three fold-out maps, 48 engraved plates, and 378 figures in the text. Octavo (22 cm), fine polished green calf, fancy gilt titles in morocco title panels, gilt decoration to cover edges and spines, a.e.g.; fine complimentary endpapers. Nelson in his ODNB article on Robinson says in part, “His books and periodicals provided Robinson with platforms from which to promote his own philosophy of gardening, and in this he was pre-eminently successful. Robinson, it is widely claimed, was ‘responsible for sweeping away... carpet-bedding’... and promoting a more relaxed style using hardy plants.” Robinson is described variously as the father of English gardening, sensitive, irascible, belligerent, saintly, capricious and ‘especially in later life’ apt to hold contradictory views with equal enthusiasm-- but, of course, he’s not the only gardener to do so. Description:

London: H. Woodfall et al., 1768. Fourth edition, in seven volumes (pp. 427, index; 487, index; 493, index; 411, index; 499, index; 633, index; 655). Tall octavo (21 cm) original bindings in full calf, with various coats of arms and related symbols in quite fine copper-plate engravings; the complete text generally clean and tidy. Collins (1682?- 1760) was at once author, editor, publisher, and bookseller who produced a number of what today might be called ‘royalty’ books. A relatively early edition of a work begun in 1709- 12; there were many subsequent (one 19th century edition, a continuation by Brydges, ran to nine volumes and 5000 words). This social register was perhaps indicative of the aristocracy’s sense of secure privilege in the scheme of things-- it was a list on which one wanted to be found, and is still useful for genealogical searches. Debrett’s Peerage and Baronetage is a late-comer, the first edition having appeared in 1769. Offered here as an excellent candidate for… Read more

Description:
Boston: Marsh & Capen, 1829. First edition (162, appendix, postscript, contents, errata, adverts). Includes as appendix and postscript a twenty page extract from Mary Griffith’s article on bee-keeping from the North American Review, October, 1828. (See our book No. 731, [Griffith, Mary]. Our Neighbourhood, or Letters on Horticulture and Natural Phenomena: Interspersed with Opinions on Domestic and Moral Economy. New York: Bliss, 1831.). In tan quarter cloth and paper-covered boards, title in black on spine label. Lightly foxed and damp-stained throughout, as is common enough. James Thacher, M.D., (1754- 1844) was a surgeon during the Revolution and later published a number of medical works, both technical (an unsuccessful treatment for hydrophobia) and historical (biographical sketches in Memoirs of Eminent American Doctors). Thacher’s suggested methods for managing the bee moth problem include a sugar and vinegar trap (He suggests the drunken moths can be fed to the chickens), beating… Read more

Description:
London: J. Debrett, 1784. First edition (viii, 378), Volume I only (of two). Duodecimo in full contemporary leather, skillfully repaired hinges. Portrait of Abercrombie as frontipiece. This, the first volume of Abercrombie’s book includes a discussion of propagation (seed, suckers, layering, cuttings, pipings, etc.) and botanical types (a capacious list of plants most suitable to one or another use). According to Fussell, John Abercrombie’s (1726- 1806) works proliferated over sixteen titles, some of which appeared in numerous later editions (The Gardener’s Pocket Journal and Annual Register, probably his last book, reached thirty-five editions by 1857), nearly a match for Arthur Young’s industrious output. Abercrombie, as with many writers of that day and this, found it useful to resurrect, expand, and recast earlier work, and, in the result, it might be said with Weston that Abercrombie’s titles are ‘so verbose and so confusing’ [This book’s title runs on for… Read more
