Description:
8 x 34 inches. B&w photograph, with photographer's name in the plate in the lower right corner. Rolled, with a slight crease to the left edge and a small corner crease to the right edge; light soiling to verso.
A large panoramic photograph of an unnamed chicken farm, probably in Petaluma or Penngrove, California, given Hanasono Studio's San Francisco location. Although there is nothing in the photo itself to indicate the farm was owned by Japanese Americans, it is possible, as Hanasono Studio was owned and operated by Japanese Americans George and Mabel Hanasono. George was heavily involved in the Bay Area Japanese American community, and was one of the partners in the restaurant Nisei Grill, on Post Street in San Francisco.
We find no records of this photograph in OCLC, and locate only a handful of any photographs by Hanasono Studio in online records, all related to the Japanese American community.

Description:
8-1/4 x 11 inches. 60pp, recto only. Burgundy cloth photo album with gilt title and ornament stamped to spine, brown paper leaves reinforced with cloth at the gutter. 55 b&w photographs + 6 cyanotypes, 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches each; holograph text in verse, in Spanish. All but two photos are pasted in one per page; two additional photographs are laid in, one a duplicate possibly removed from another album, and one on a loose leaf of black construction paper and seemingly unrelated to the text. Light wear to spine ends and corners; front hinge gently split; light dampstaining to edge of front endpaper; text of one page smeared from contact with moisture, although there is no damp-staining and the text is still readable.
An original proto-fotonovella, relating in dramatic fashion the tale of four young couples who fall in love despite opposition from their guardians -- who, it turns out, are themselves a pair of star-crossed lovers who fell in love during an unnamed 19th-century war in the United States… Read More

Description:
San Francisco: Christofferson Aircraft Mfg. Co., (n. d.), circa 1912. Very Good. 16 x 10.5 cm. Handbill, printed recto only. White stock printed in black. Long pencil notation to verso, presumably detailing a streetcar trip in San Francisco ("Up Market, down Van Ness -- [Outer?] zone -- down Zone. avenue to aviation field -- around field -- many pictures. Art stood all way"). Slight crease near one corner, else remarkably well-preserved. A rare promotional piece for Silas Christofferson and the Christofferson Aircraft Manufacturing Co., advertising aviation as "a safe and sane sport". Free exhibitions were offered daily "at the beach," presumably near the Christofferson hangar on Ocean Drive at Sloat Boulevard. Silas Christofferson was, with his brother Harry, one of the "early birds of aviation," and became known for such feats as flying in 1912 from the top of the Multnomah Building in Portland, Oregon, to the Vancouver barracks eight miles away. That year, both he and the Christofferson Aircraft… Read More

Description:
Chicago: Pinkerton's National Detective Agency, 1911. Very Good. 11" x 8-1/2". Circular, printed recto only. White stock printed in black, b&w illustration. Three holes punched to upper portion of leaf, slightly affecting text; old folds. Wanted circular for Edward J. Tierney, who, according to a contemporary newspaper account, "is the 'classiest' looking of all the criminals that the police have been asked to look out for" (Bridgeport Times and Evening Farmer, Feb. 23, 1911). Wearing a dress coat in the photo provided for the circular, Tierney worked as a traffic clerk for the Western Electric Company in Dallas before disappearing in November, 1910. The reader is warned that he "might be found in the Shipping or Traffic Department of some electrical concern or railway office, and he may also endeavor to obtain a position as a chauffeur or at some Vaudeville House or Moving Picture Show as he is a competent chauffer and a good singer as well." Oddly, the 28-year-old Tierney is never implicated in… Read More

Description:
7 x 11-3/4 inches. 28 leaves containing 52 b&w photographs and three blue photographs, as well as 17pp of holograph poetry, written in white on the black leaves, and two hand-painted color illustrations. Black hardcover post-bound album stamped in gilt. A few photos starting to come loose, else fine. Very Good or better.
An exquisite photograph album about the travels through Kashmir of one man and two women -- all white, possibly British, inscribed only to "Auntie Gillmore" -- filled with vernacular photographs of the countryside and local people. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned, and the three blue photos appear to be made after the method devised by Frank A. Perrett to photograph volcanoes in the early 1900s, rather than being cyanotypes.
The trio's journey is narrated in rhymed poetry written by the man of the group, as revealed on the last page: "The author of the photographs, / And also of the paragraphs, / Is standing on the Kamri Pass, / Complete with alpenstock and glass. / He… Read More
