Description:
No Binding. Good. pp [4] being a leaflet as a single folded sheet, folded size approx 220x278mm. In addition to Russell's article - occupying around a page and a quarter - there's a similarly sized piece by A Barratt Brown titled "Revolution and Non-Resistance, An Appeal for an Unarmed Revolution", a slightly shorter one by Edith M Ellis ("The Conscientious Objectors' Contribution to the Movement for Freedom") and half a page, untitled, by Henry T Hodgkin. Published by the National Labour Press and issued as a supplement to "The Tribunal" of July 19, 1917 following a meeting of several peace organisations "to consider their relation to Internationalist movements for freedom", to publish the individual statements to stimulate thought on the subject. Virtually a century old, certainly, but absolutely germane to our situation today. As the paper is standard newsprint it's now browned and a little frayed or cracked on the edges or the fold but still… Read More

Description:
Hardback. Good. Printed by the Nonconformists of Great Britain and Ireland Associated for Promoting the Dissenters' Chapels Bill ... London, 1844, this being a presentation copy (so noted in the imprint) here to The Revd. M C Frankland; 8vo, pp xviii, 492; tight and clean other than for some scattered foxing but bound in a rather dreary brown cloth with startlingly white end papers contrasting with the now toned paper of the text. The Bill derived from religious squabbling linked to a bequest for benevolent purposes and an associated financial trust. The point at issue was whether Unitarians might benefit or whether benefit was to be restricted to those committing to Trinitarianism; the purpose of the Bill, subsequently enacted in 1844, was to have a retrospective element attached to the date on which Unitarianism obtained legal tolerance as a belief and to set a cap of 25 years beyond which the right of possession of a chapel could not be challenged on doctrinal grounds.

Description:
Hardback. Fair. Simpkin, Marshall and Co., London, 1844, first public edition; small 8vo, two volumes, pp [1-3], 4-288 and [1-3], 4-248; contemporary blue-green cloth gilt, non-matching, somewhat worn, internally generally firm and tight but with the final free sheet of vol I missing and with the tp of vol II supplied as a modern photocopy, pages lightly browned throughout, more particularly on the edges. The sheets have clearly been bound in cloth on different occasions although the binding each volume appears to be more or less contemporary with publication. The dimensions of the pages, allowing for inevitable minor variation in trimming, are the same as are the dimensions of the text; however, vol II is perhaps 1-2mm shorter in height than is vol I and the positioning of the lettering on the spine differs. The binding to vol I is a chalky blue-green with blind embossed arabesque decoration at the edges and corners and fairly modern cream laid end papers; that of vol II is a dull, dark green… Read More

Soft cover. Fair. Ernest Benn, London, (and) Carl Aug. Seyfried, Munich; 8vo, 130 x 182mm; pp [vi, being adverts], 390, [xiii, being adverts]; pink cloth titled gilt on the front cover and the spine, the spine now faded to brown and the front and back covers similarly faded at the edges; extensively illustrated with the photographs mentioned. ... ... ... The text of the play takes some 135pp of the whole, the remainder giving detailed information on the history of the play, notes on the actors, on the theatre and the music, on previous plays and also on Munoch including how to get there and what else to see when visiting. Note that the text in this book is a translation of the German and adds information explaining relevant matters, claimed in order to help visitors who don't speak German understand what's going on. This text therefore differs both in extra content and in the actual words employed from the text of item 001066 also offered here for sale.

The play was first staged in 1634 and performed nearly every decade since. Inevitably the text has changed and this version gives the official text for the 1930 season, following the enlargement of the theatre to accommodate the increasing audiences; a note in the text indicates that the play ran from 08.00 to 18.00 with a pause at midday of two hours. ... ... ... Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. Quartet Books, London and elsewhere, 1979, first edition; 8vo, pp [x], 278; 25 illustrations, some as individual plates and others on the one plate; dull red cloth boards, pictorial dust wrapper, very good copy. Mediaeval European culture was Greek, Latin and arabic but the Arabic thread, as with comparable influence in mathematics and medicine, has largely been overlooked, its not being recognised that the form and content of literature largely assumed to be exclusively western owe a significant debt to this Arab heritage. The book traces the spread of this culture from the east, using a rich collection of biblical and other stories, including erotic material such as those of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Alexander the Great, and more, and draws on the great seminal tale collections such as Disciplina Clericalis and The Arabian Nights.

An impressively detailed and comprehensive work by a specialist journalist covering the country's shift over 60 years from a traditional society to a modern economic powerhouse. That it necessarily stops shortly before the advent of Xi Jinping to power in no way detracts from the important information and interpretation it gives of China's recent history and growth. ... ... ... ... ...
