Very Good to Good+ harbound second printing of volumes 1 & 2 with black lettering on pasted paper title blocks on spine and cover. These volumes were first published in 1887, and reissued after the Mermaid Series was aquired by T. Fisher Unwin publishers in 1894. Publication date not indicated, but could be as late as 1920. The title blocks on the spines are considerably more soiled and darkened than the ones on the front covers. Shelf wear and rubbing to top and bottom of spine on both copies. The paper over the boards and spine has begun to wear through and fray along the edges of the spines, revealing the cloth webbing in some places, especially at the top of volume I, but the binding is straight and tight on both books nevertheless. Major flaws include a sizable 1x2 inch abrasion on front cover (and what appears to be a smudge of whiteout that runs about 2 1/2 inches. The previous owner had stamped his named in three places (inside the front cover, on the opposite end papers and on top of the pages) and in each location the previous owner has also attempted to blot out that name with a black magic marker. So three sizable marks. The latter on top of the pages makes it seem at first glance like a remainder, but it's not. Underlining with a red pencil on pages 231-236.
