[1] Homer's 'Iliad' (1-410pp); Homer's 'Odyssey' (411-781pp); [2] Hesiod and others (1-489pp) Bound in full best calf over raised bands in period style with blind tooled panels to each of the boards. 4 labels with hand lettering. The text is clean and tidy with good margins, few marks and crisp throughout. This edition, one of Stephanus' most impressive productions, is set in the 'Grecs du roi' typeface of Garamond and comprises Homer's two magnus works, Hesiod's 'Works and Days', the 'Argonautica', the 'Orphic Hymns' and other works. Half leather (Victorian?), marbled boards, gilt lines to spine. Polhill was a non-conforming Puritan who held to a hypothetical universal redemption position. John Owen disagreed with him on this point but lauded most of his writings.

Text continuous despite pagination. In very good condition, with some minor fraying to inner gutter at the base of the index pages at rear.

Later C19th? Half calf, marbled boards, straight spine with gilt lines.

Edward Polhill (1622-1694) was an English Puritan writer and theologian from Suffolk. He studied at Cambridge University and became a minister in the Church of England, but was ejected for non- conformity in 1662. Polhill was known for his piety and devotion to God, as well as his advocacy for religious toleration and civil liberties. He wrote several influential works, including 'The Divine Will Considered in its Eternal Decrees'; and 'A View of Some Divine Truths,' which were widely read and discussed by his contemporaries. Polhill's writings had a significant impact on the development of English Protestant theology and religious thought.

A very clean copy with minor stains. This is an excessively rare edition, with only a single copy located in the US.

William Whately was a Puritan preacher who lived in England during the 17th century. He was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1583 and studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. He became a pastor in Banbury in 1605 and later served as a minister in Banbury and then Deddington. Quarto. 180mm x 140mm. Engraved title page, chipped and browned at edges. Typographic title page. Lacks paste-down and end pages. [18],128, 123-451, 451-452, [17]pp. 1 large folding table inserted. No rear end-pages. Pages are very good with some dog ears and browning at extremities. Full contemporary C17th boards recently rebacked in style with raised bands and label.

[10], 588, [6] p., with an engraved map of Britain and and engraved folding map of the Kent Beacons. Shaved close in places touching some letters to running heads. Repair to p.69/70 at top inner gutter with slight loss. A large closed tear across p.151/2. The folding map has been repaired to the bottom and outer edges.A complete copy in very good condition throughout notwithstanding the faults mentioned. Original calf boards sometime rebacked, early C20th (?) over raised bands.William Lambarde, although a writer on legal matters, was especially well-known for this work, the first publication on any English county.
