("Floating Travelers," a novel) Octavo 20x13.5 cm., wrappers, 277pp. Cover design by Natan Al'tman. Kuzmin's novel narrates the story of a love triangle, based on his cohabitation with Sergei Sudeikin and his wife Olga Glebova, a complex homoerotic entanglement. Mikhail Kuzmin (1872-1936) was a poet, musician, and novelist, a prominent contributor to the Russian Silver Age of poetry. He was associated with Mir Iskusstva, ambiguous as a symbolist and celebrated as a decadent, but was particularly important in midwifing the birth of the Acmeist group of poets (Mandelstam, Akhmatova, Gumilev), emphasizing clarity and timeless realism. He managed to stay productive and unscathed through the Soviet years up to his death, just prior to the purges which took away all of his friends and associates and would have included him. No institutional holdings for this work found worldwide. This copy uncut, with covers fresh, interior pages fragile. A rarity.

Stunning photomontage cover credited to Jindrich Kucera but most likely designed by Vojtech Tittelbach. The book is richly illustrated with photos, charts and texts examining the achievements of industry and production in the 20th century to date. Original cover preserved in hand-tooled custom binding, also designed by Capek. Translated from the French by J. Borecký. OCLC finds three North American institutional holdings and only two more worldwide, both in Czech Republic. Very fine condition, as new.

Prague: Pokrok, 1933 Octavo 19x12.5 cm., wrappers, 381(2) pp. Ergon Erwin Kisch (1885-1948) was a colorful reporter who is known as the founder of „investigative journalism,“ but historians view his work as art literature than an objective description of real events. Based in Berlin, he wrote in German for Prague newspapers and was given diplomatic status which protected him as a Jew and communist. Always appreciated for his humor, his journalistic legacy is now treated as more „creative“ than factual. Karel Mrzilek cover design. Pitaval is an exposé of sensational criminal cases, in this case occurring in contemporary Bohemia. OCLC locates 10 holdings outside of Czechia

Uncommon Marshak-Tsekhanovsky collaborationOctavo 19x14 cm., wrappers, 10 pp. 30,000 copies. Illustrated by M. Tsekhanovskii. The first printing in 1924 had artwork by Boris Kustodiev. Samuil Marshak (1187-1964) enjoys a worldwide readership for his writings for children and adults, which have been translated in many languages. He collaborated with modernist artists and illustrators of note in the 1920s and 30s. Mikhail Tskhanovskii (1889-1965) is an interesting case in point. Mikhail Mikhailovich was a prominent animation artist in addition to his work as a book artist, screenwriter and sculptor. In animation he collaborated with Daniil Kharms, Aleksandr Vvedenskii and D. Shostakovich in experimental work which never was released; he was later awarded the status of National Artist. Worldcat finds no institutional holdings in North America for the edition with Tsekhanovskii's work.

Tartu: Noor-Eesti Kirjastus, 1927 Octavo, wrappers, 159pp. Author Albert Kivikas (1898-1978) is one of Estonia’s most distinguished writers. He experimented with Futurism in the early years of the new republic, publishing a landmark dadaist work, Lendavad sead (Flying Pigs). He went on to develop as a neo-relist and his work culminated in the novel Nimor marmortahvlil in 1936. The present work comes from his most productive period, from 1921 to 1927 and translates as „Red and White,“ a collection of short stories mostly dealing with war and revolution. Fine cover design by Peet Aren. Worldcat finds only one copy of this work in North American libraries.

The first publication devoted exclusively to Kakabadze and the in Georgian language. while he resided and worked in Paris.. David (Davit) Kakabadze (1889-1952) was one of the most important Georgian modernists of great originality. He was a visionary, decidedly modernist but eluding classification into a school. This work reviews his work in Paris over four years and traces his development from figurative realism and Georgian visual motifs into biomorphic abstraction and a thoroughly mature voice. While in Paris, Kakabadze lectured on art and wrote theoretical treatises; he was also a noted scholar. He was intrigued by kinetic art and cinematography. Quarto 26x19 cm., wrappers, (12) pp. Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Pavlovich (1895-1980) is known primarily for her poetry, but from 1925 to 1932 she authored a number of children's books. The present work is an exciting collaboration with Boris Kustodiev (1878-1927), renowned painter and stage designer who also was a book artist from 1905 who celebrated Russian life with great zest. A very fine copy. OCLC locates three holdings in North American for this work (Amherst, Princeton, LOC).

Moscow-Leningrad: Tea-Kinopechat', 1928 Octavo 16.5x12.5 cm., wrappers, 16pp. Front and rear covers in blue and brown by Iakov Guminer, 18000 copies. Paul Wegener (1874-1948) was a German actor, screenwriter and film director. In 1912, he turned to the new medium of motion pictures and appeared in the 1913 version of The Student of Prague. It was while making this film that he first heard the old Jewish legend of the Golem and proceeded to adapt the story to film, co-directing and co-writing the script with Henrik Galeen. His first version of the tale The Golem (1915, now lost) was a success and firmly established Wegener's reputation. In 1917, he made a parody of the story called Der Golem und die Tänzerin, but it was his reworking of the tale, The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920) which stands as one of the classics of German cinema and helped to cement Wegener's place in cinematic history. Prague: Plamja, 1931 Octavo, decorated cloth, 338pp. Six original woodcuts by František Krajc. Josef Jahoda (1872-1946), journalist, novelist, poet, teacher, authored over 90 books. His novels dealt with people on the edge of society, usually in smaller town settings. His most famous work, Havlickuv Maj, was published after WWII. Artist Rudolf Krajc (1907-1934) was an upcoming brilliant artist who was hailed by Styrsky as a new lamp of modernism. He died of tuberculosis within a year of his first solo show. Prague: Druzstveni Prace, 1929, 1929 Octavo (18.5 x 13.5cm, 7-3/8 x 5-3/8in), decorated cloth. 138pp, in an edition of 1040. Publisher's cloth cover, with abstraction by Frinta, 5 full-page illustrations, title and 5 tail-pieces by Toyen. This cloth edition includes the trade paper wrapper. PEKAR JAN MARHOUL is considered to be Vancura's greatest novel. Vancura (1891-1942) is held as one of the most important Czech writers of the modern era; his novels are particularly distinguished, the most famous one being Pekar Jan Márhoul, which received many printings and was translated into many languages. He was involved in the Tvrdošíjní group from a young age and participated in the leading modernist developments in Czechoslovakia as a literary light and also as film director, playwright and screenwriter. He suffered the fate as one of the elite executed in response to the Heydrich assassination. Condition near fine.

Peřeje (Rapids) is a poetry collection by Fišer (also Fischer, 1883-1938), translator, playwright, poet and critic who played a role in the regional Czech avant-garde. No. 321 of 350 numbered copies. There are seven institutional holdings in North America. Small chip on upper right cover.

Ceske Budejovice: K. Ausobsky, 1936 Octavo, wrappers, 45pp. A small manual on perspective drawing for students of the middle and technical schools. The cover design, unattributed, is striking. All of the Linie group in Ceske Budejovice were teachers and the cover could have come from on of them. A near fine copy, this. Only one library holding worldwide, in the Czech National Library.

Prague: Tramp, 1930 Octavo, wrappers, 61pp. No. 12 of 50 signed copies. Géza (pseud. of Antonín Eduard) Vcelicka (1901-1966) was a poet, journalist and wanderer. He was a driving presence in the journal „Tramp,“ which he led for years. Tramp was a wild leftist publication, and extolled the virtues of living on the edge, avoiding conventional responsibilities and behavior, not buying into any system. Tramp was taken directly from the English, probably from Jack London’s writings. Tramping became rather widespread among the Czech and Slovak youth, taking freely to the woods and escaping the humdrum monotony of factory and bourgeois life. Vcelicka defended Tramping as a way of life throughout his career and up to his death. The present work (Footprints of Dreams) is a collection of poems from the previous two years of free wandering.
