The so-called Spanish flu pandemic, which would eventually claim over 20 million lives worldwide, arrived in Melbourne at the very end of 1918. Victorian doctors were already obliged by law to report every case of an infectious disease when a patient presented with symptoms. From the 1850s, the dreaded bacterial disease diphtheria had been one of the leading causes of infant mortality in all of the Australian colonies. Description:
1878-79. Albumen print of a photographic montage, cabinet card format, 107 x 165 mm, captioned in the negative at lower margin Queensland in Miniature, and with the photographers' studio information at the centre of the image, Metcalfe & Bennett, Artist Photographers, Queen Street, Brisbane; the verso is blank; the albumen print is in good condition with some light rubbing; the mount is lightly foxed.  A fascinating and apparently unrecorded promotional cabinet card for the Brisbane photographic firm of Metcalfe and Bennett, dating to either 1878 or 1879, the only two years they were active at their Queen Street address (Davies & Stanbury, Mechanical Eye). The carefully arranged montage features approximately 100 of Metcalfe & Bennett's photographs, all relating to Brisbane or Queensland and including carte de visite portraits of Aborigines, theatre personalities, dignitaries, Brisbane buildings and streetscapes, and, at the centre, a panorama of the city of Brisbane taken from opposite Kangaroo Point.

Albumen print photograph (220 x 280 mm) of an oil painting, laid down on original album page (ink stains within the negative, edges of the page stained), signature appears on painting at lower left: T. Wright. Photographer unknown. The painting has been identified as Scene on the Waipunga River, New Zealand, by Thomas Wright, which is held in the collection of the Bendigo Art Gallery. (Identification courtesy of Tansy Curtin, Senior Curator, Bendigo Art Gallery).   The English-born painter and photographer Thomas Wright (1830-1881) arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and worked professionally as a landscape and portrait painter. As early as 1852 he had won a gold medal at the Victorian Industrial Exhibition for his work View on the River Plenty. He later spent some time prospecting for gold at Bendigo, and by the early 1860s he was painting local scenes in that region, some of which became published as lithographs. In the mid 1860s he was based in Melbourne once again, employed as drawing… Read More
