Description:
Paris: Charles Gosselin, 1829. In two volumes. [4], 234; [4], 216pp. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt. A trifle rubbed. Scattered foxing, FFEP of Vol. I detached. The first edition in French of Irish novelist, poet, and playwright John Banim's (1798-1842) Peter of the Castle, originally published together in 1826 with The Boyne Water and The Nowlans, as the second series of his Tales from the O'Hara Family. Although far less popular today than his successfully contemporaries, the works of Banim, and his brother Matthew, achieved significant commercial success during the late Regency period. Indeed, a contemporary reviewer in the Revue encyclopédique (1829) notes that the French public 'attend aujourd'hui un roman de Banim avec une impatience presque egale a cella qu'il manifesta a chaque annonce d'une traduction de Scott ou de Cooper'. Uncommon; OCLC locates copies at only four libraries worldwide (BL,… Read More

Description:
[London?]: [s.n.], [1797?] 80pp. Without half-title. Stitched, as issued. Title page and final leaf browned and dusty, loss to head and foot of both, partial early inked ownership inscription to head of title, several wormtracks running through text block - touching text at times, without loss of sense. A rare survival, in original unsophisticated state, of the sole edition of a pamphlet issued at the request of George III, reproducing dispatches relating to the fruitless negotiations held at Lisle in 1797 in an effort to bring peace between Britain and the French Directory. The British cause was represented by James Harris, First Earl of Malmesbury (1746-1820); the Republic by plenipotentiaries Hugues-Bernard Maret, Georges Rene Le Peley de Pleville and Etienne Louis Francois Honore Letourner. Malmesbury arrived on 30th May, but, after proceedings were purposely protracted by the Directory, he returned home on the 20th September without having made any progress towards a cessation of hostilities.… Read More

London: Printed for T. Cadell, Jun, and W. Davies, (successors to Mr. Cadell), 1795. [4], iv, [4], 280pp. With large folding map of the Mediterranean and Middle East as frontispiece. Uncut in recent half calf over marbled boards, contrasting title label, gilt. Very slight rubbing to spine, else a fine copy. A little marginal worming to preliminaries. With attractive contemporary bookplate of S. Harward's Circulating Library, Colonnade Buildings, Cheltenham to FEP, inscribed 'Presented to me by the Editor, C.D.' Charles Dunster (1750-1816), Anglican clergyman. His literary works, which include a translation of Aristophanes and an edition of John Philip's poem Cyder, were generally adorned with detailed notes - and this scholarly edition of Milton's Paradise Regained proves no exception. Harward's circulating library (which had two branches, at the Collonade and in the High St.) appears to have been the most significant of three in Cheltenham at the turn of the… Read More

A Amsterdam: [s.n.], 1775. xii, 13-123, [9], 269-276pp. Uncut in original publisher's plain paper wrappers. Substantial loss to spine, text-block holding firm by cords. Internally clean and crisp, a very good copy. The first edition of the first part of this apologetic work by French philosopher Jean Baptiste Claude Delisle de Sales (1741-1816). In 1775, following the condemnation of his De la Philosophie de la Nature (1766) which had propounded tenants of atheism and nihilism, Delisle de Sales was exiled. The Paradoxes are a defence of that work and formed a part of his appeal for return; in which he would be supported by fellow philosophers, including Voltaire. Two further parts, on the freedom of the press and luxury, were subsequently published. . First edition. 8vo.

Description:
Wellington, Salop: Printed by and for F. Houston and Son, [1824]. 148pp. With an engraved frontispiece. Uncut in original publisher’s printed buff paper boards. Extremities worn and marked, later naive clear adhesive repairs to joints and spine. Hinges exposed, frontispiece and title page browned, publication dates scratched away from both, occasional chipping to margins, scattered spotting. A rare survival of the sole edition of a juvenile geography primer composed entirely in verse. Unsurprisingly, given the constraints of the metrical form, very little in the way of useful geographic information is provided; with each entry (vaguely covering the continents of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas) rapidly descending into a list of primary waterways and notable mountain ranges in a select few countries. A series of lengthy prose notes are provided, though these are in the main seemingly anecdotal and rarely connected with the intended subject of the book. The main body of the text… Read More

Early ownership inscription of 'Mary Wright Bought this Book at Chelsea on the 21st of July 1838' to inside of upper wrapper. An apparently unrecorded issue, in original unsophisticated state, of the scarce introductory brochure and guide to the Stadium, a pioneering metropolitan sports club set up at Chelsea Farm in 1831 by convicted stock-market fraudster Charles Random, Baron de Berenger.
