George Burgess (1809-1866) was raised in the Congregational church, though study led him to the Episcopal Church. After several years studying theology under the guidance of his rector he spent 3 years attending lectures at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn, and Gottingen. Contained in slipcase which is sunbleached. Caspar Schwenkfeld (1489-1561) was a German preacher and one of the earliest promoters of the Protestant Reformation in Silesia. He developed his own principles and fell out with Martin Luther over the eucharistic controversy (1524). His followers became a new sect, which was outlawed in Germany and influenced Anabaptism and Puritanism in England, and Pietism on mainland Europe. A nice example of a scarce Perry Pictures imprint. The Perry Pictures were popular in Victorian America. Although the edges are defective, this is a good candidate for cropping or framing.

Louis Heumann (1869-1918) was a German Catholic priest, a noted naturopath and founder of a successful German pharmaceutical company. Pastor Heumann, known as “Heilmittelpfarrer” or “Cure Pastor” was active in efforts to improve the lot of his rural parishioners. These efforts led to improvements in veterinary medicine,which in turn led to human medicines such as an ointment for leg ulcers and a series of other medications. He achieved his greatest success with this work, which first appeared in 1915, and is a skillful blend of medical education and advertising. A fascinating early American medical/pharmaceutical catalogue and guide.

In addition to serving as Bishop of Massachusetts, Brooks authored the lyrics to "O Little Town of Bethlehem," was an influential abolitionist and was a proponent of the Liturgical Movement, the influence of which may be seen in Trinity Church, Philadelphia, which was constructed while he was rector. He is commemorated on January 23 on the Episcopal Kalendar.

Bound in (near?) contemporary waxed cloth with gilt tile to front cover and gilt title, author and publisher to spine. Spine a little sunbleached and very light rubbing to extremities. A spectacular copy of this reprinting on de Bury's work on the love of books and book collecting in Latin with English translation. It also contains biographical and historical materials.
