PADRAIC COLUM (1881-1972). Colum was a notable Irish Revival poet and author. SB. 214 pgs. A copy of The Collected Poems of Padraic Colum, inscribed and signed “For Virginia Follin Padraic Collum”. The collection of Colum’s poems was published by Devin-Adair in 1953. It lacks a dust jacket, and it has noticeable wear and tear to the spine and edges of the covers. Some of the pages are slightly yellowed, and some have minor stains.

DS. 1pg. 5 ¾” x 2 ¾”. Jan 29 1774. No place. A partly printed document signed “Tho Francklin” acknowledging that he “RECEIVED of the Revd Edward Gregory the Sum of One Guinea, being the first Payment for one Copy of the Translation of Lucian.” Lucian was a famous satirical Greek author. The Reverend Edward Gregory was from Langar, England and he discovered a comet in 1793. The document is laid down to a larger sheet and is in fine condition.

HERBERT HOOVER (1874-1964). Hoover was the Thirty-First President of the United States. He was the first Quaker to be President. A pair of letters written in January 1929, just before Herbert Hoover’s 1929 Presidential Inaugural. A Washington D.C.-based minister named Moses R. Lovell wrote a lengthy missive to Hoover on the subject of Hoover’s becoming America’s first Quaker President. Lovell, who was not a Quaker, gave Hoover advice about how and where to worship during his Presidency. Hoover responded with a brief thank you. Both letters are in very good condition. a) TLS. 1pg. THEODORE B. STARR (1837-1907). Starr was a noted American silversmith based in New York. A pair of autograph letters signed “Theodore B. Starr”, both on “Theodore B. Starr Diamonds & Sterling Silverware” stationery. In these August 1886 letters, Starr wrote to a customer named F. W. Ward of Burlington, Vermont, concerning the order of an engraved locket. a) ALS. 1pg. August 11, 1886. 206 Fifth Avenue, New York. An autograph letter signed “Theodore B. Starr”: “Dear Sir. – By National express today in answer to your note…I have much pleasure in sending to you for your examination three lockets, and two designs for monograms to be engraved. For a locket to be worn inside the dress I cannot recommend a raised monogram. It ought to be engraved. The engraving we will do without charge. I got up rather early this morning and it is now 6:30 A.M. – and the thermometer is just 76, so that it [is] really comfortable – as you can imagine. Some of the boys that are new-comers here want me to go across the canal to a native village with them as I talk Spanish and they thought I could guide them a little better as I know the culture and language of the natives. One man is sort of a horticulturist and agriculturist from one of the western states just came here to work on the docks & terminals and he is very much interested in plant and jungle life here. EDMUND BURKE (1729-1797). Burke was an Irish politician, philosopher, and longtime British parliamentarian. ALS. 1pg. May 1, 1796. Baconsfield, England. An autograph letter signed “Edm. Burke”. Burke wrote to banker Stephen Thurston Adey. “My Dear Adey, I suppose you have already had a Bill drawn on your home from Wm. Smettel at Bath for twenty five pounds on my account. I beg you to honour it. I am ever my d. friend Very truly yours Edm Burke”. The letter is in very good condition, with creasing, mild discoloration, and small tears throughout. Burke is a scarce autograph.

PAUL VERLAINE (1844-1896). Verlaine was a famous French poet best associated with the symbolist movement. ALS. 1pg. 1894. No place. An autograph letter signed “P. Verlaine” in French to Theo. The poet mentions that he received an envelope with manuscripts and has a lengthy postscript. The Verlaine letter is framed together with a cover of Oeuvres Poetiques by Verlaine with his portrait.

PEARL BUCK (1892-1973). Buck, an American writer, won both the Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize. She was born in West Virginia, the daughter of missionaries, and lived in China until 1933. Many of her works discuss China and its people. Her best known works are The Good Earth, Dragon Seed, My Several Worlds and A Bridge for Passing. DS. 2pg. 8 ½” x 14”. April 23, 1959. New York. A legal document signed “Pearl S. Buck” and representatives of an Argentinian publishing company. It concerns publishing her book Command The Morning in Argentina in the Spanish language. The signature is strong and the edges, particularly the bottom one, is chipped. The condition is good.

PEARL S. BUCK (1892-1973). Buck was a prolific, Nobel Prize-winning writer and missionary who spent much of her life in China. DS. 2pgs. April 23, 1959. N.p. A printed document signed “Pearl S Buck”. It is a contract for Spanish-language publication of Buck’s novel Command the Morning. “MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT made and entered into this 23rd day of April 1959 BETWEEN Pearl S. Buck, c/o. On behalf of the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, White wrote to Founding Father Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814), thanking him for donating a book to the university. “Sir, At a late Meeting of the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania there was laid before them the letter which you did them the Honour to address to them, and accompanying a late Work on Physiology by Richard Saumarez Esq of London. PETER MORAN (1814-1914). Moran was a British-born American artist best known for his paintings of animals, particularly horses. PS. No date. No place. A cabinet card signed “Very Truly Yours P Moran” on the lower verso. The image was taken by Philadelphia’s Scheiber & Sons. There is staining on the verso and marks to the borders on the front. RareBookHub.com shows no other Peter Moran signed photographs ever selling.

PAULINE CHASE (1885-1962). Chase was an American actress best remembered for her portrayals of Peter Pan. Signature. 1913. Bristol. A fountain pen signature and inscription “’I ran away the day I was born’ Peter Pan Pauline Chase 1913”. It is laid at the top to another sheet, has a faint mailing fold and is in fine condition on hotel stationery.

An autographed document signed by various Oregon legal luminaries petitioning the Circuit Court of Oregon “On the matter of the admission of Gen EL Applegate to practice in the courts of the Second Judicial District” of Oregon. Signers of the petition, each in their own hand, are a who’s who of mid-19th century Oregon legal leaders, including “R. Strahan” (Reuben S. Strahan, later the 15th Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1890-1892), “R Williams” (Richard Williams, later a congressman from 1877-1879), “A.A. Skinner” (Alonzo Skinner, previously a Justice on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1866-1867), “John Burnett” (a future judge on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1874-1876), among others. After the start of the Mexican War, Goldsmith appeals to be sent to Mexico: "As a Regt of Volunteers is called from Pennsylvania, and as many of my friends will be in said Regt, I desire the appointment of Surgeon for Regt. (WORLD WAR II). This archive consists of three photo albums created by Thomas Logan Harrigan (1913-1988). Harrigan was a United States Army officer during World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Each photo album is leather-bound, with his signature on the front along with “World War II,” the volume number, and the dates corresponding to the photographs inside. Volume I covers April 29, 1942 to December 1, 1942, and highlights Harrigan’s time in “Ireland”. Harrigan was actually stationed and resided in Northern Ireland, as Northern Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom while the Republic of Ireland controversially remained neutral during the war. Photographs include Newcastle, Belfast, Camp Girdwood, Queens University -Belfast, and the first P-38 plane unloaded in Northern Ireland. A photograph album of 111 color photographs showing the interior and exterior of the Ralph Lauren store in Beverly Hills; it is located on Rodeo Drive. The individual photographs measure 4” x 6” and they are laid into a three ring binder. The photographs illustrate both clothing and furniture offered by Ralph Lauren. The overall condition is very fine. A fine remembrance of some over-the-top Eighties fashions.

RONALD REAGAN (1911-2004). Reagan was the Fortieth President. PS. 8” x 10”. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed “Ronald Reagan”, “Gerald R. Ford”, “Jimmy Carter”, and “Richard Nixon”. The color image depicts these four Presidents standing together in the White House on October 8, 1981, in the first year of Reagan’s Presidency. This well-known image was taken as the three former Presidents were about to fly to Egypt for Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat’s funeral. All four signed on the wide lower margin, likely on different dates. In fine condition.

JOHN BIRKS “DIZZY” GILLESPIE (1917-1993). Gillespie was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and singer. In 1989, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The photograph is printed on cardstock and is in excellent condition.
