An eloquent description of the Queen's collection of plate, used at Clarence House by Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh from the time of their marriage in 1947 until after her accession to the throne and her move to Buckingham Palace. The text discusses great collections of plate owned by past Kings and brought to marriage by queens as part of their dowry, as well as the custom of presenting a gift of plate on ceremonial occasions and diplomatic plate presentations, the importance of the silver spoon (aside from being born with it in one's mouth) and their bequeathal to individuals and institutions as were silver drinking vessels as well. 64 photographs include pieces by Paul de Lamerle, Nicholas Clausen, Paul Storr, Thomas Farrer, the Hennells, Robert Garrard and others as well as some foreign plate, a few French, Dutch, Italian pieces.
