Sewn as a guard into the middle of the first gathering, between a4 and a5, is a single strip roughly two lines in height; and a second guard sewn in between P4 and P5—the first and last gatherings were commonly so guarded, as they bore the most stress during operation—this one bearing perhaps a little more than a single line of Donatus.
