Description:
London: Academy Press, 1995. First Paperback Edition . Buckram. Very Good/Very Good. A crisp, clean Very Good copy rebound in black library buckram without the original wraps. Deaccessioned from the University of Virginia Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library. A contemporary of Le Corbusier and one-time employee of Frank Lloyd Wright, R.M. Schindler was architect of (amongst much else of note) the Lovell Beach House in California, acknowledged to be one of the key modernist buildings of the 1920s. This book, a reappraisal of Schindler's thought and works, presents plans, line drawings and photographs of buildings and furniture. A selection of Schindler's own writings is included, alongside articles by many scholars of the architect's works that trace Schindler's career on both sides of the Atlantic, from his early days in Vienna studying under Wagner, to his later life in America, where his talents found full expression.

Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Phaidon Inc Ltd, 2002. First Edition . Hardcover. As New/As New. Square 12mo. In original shrink wrap. Born in Rhodes, Greece, Soriano brought an outsiders perspective when he arrived in Los Angeles. He received an architecture degree from the USC and thereafter worked in the offices of Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra, and for Los Angeles County, finally starting his own practice in Los Angeles in 1936. Soriano expertly combined two of World War IIs technological innovations, aluminium and plywood, with advanced construction processes. His characteristic horizontal roofs, transparent exterior walls, and open plan responded to the souhern California climate. Soriano's architectural contribution has been largely overlooked until now. An architects architect, he tapped the burgeoning Southern California aerospace and steel industries for his architectural experiments. Many buildings have suffered inordinate damage; although he designed 150 buildings and built 38… Read More
