Full calf, smooth backs, divided into six panels by gilt rule, morocco label to second panel, contrasting oval volume label to fourth. Slightly rubbed to extremities, spine ends worn, corners slightly bumped. Internally there is an ink stain to G3 (not affecting sense), some light browning and foxing, previous owners name to titles, but generally fairly clean. Rivington, 1826. xii, [2], 332pp. Contemporary full calf, semi-raised bands, spine in five panels, title in gilt to second panel, remaining panels with central device in blind, bands gilt, covers with central panel in blind, with blind rolled frame surrounded by a single fillet gilt border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, a.e.g. marbled endpapers. Slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally bright and clean, with single worm track to fore-edge margin of last thirty or so pages (not affecting text). Montgomeryshire: The Gregynog Press, 1932. [60]p, original red Hermitage calf, title blocked in black to spine and upper cover, bevelled edges, top edge sprinkled. Rubbed to extremities, spine very slightly faded and slightly rubbed, internally quite bright and clean. In the original card slipcase, with extensive repairs. Printed in Benbo type, with Perpetua titling on Japanese vellum, printed in Tyrian red and black, the first three words of the title on the title-page are wood engraved, and with forty-one wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. Rhinegold is number two hundred and fifty-one of eleven hundred copies, Siegfried is number five hundred and eighty-eight, both signed by Rackham to limitation leaf. Internally a hint of foxing, usually to margins, volume one has a small ink mark to the margin of page xxiii and a small mark to the margin of page 69; volume two has a small amount of loss (though still attached to opposite page) to the margin of page 457 where it was opened a little carelessly, and page 475 with a similar problem with small amount of loss to top corner, neither affecting text. Complete with lithographic vignette title and twenty-five full-page tinted lithographs, with list of subscribers laid in. Abbey states there were two hundred and nine subscribers, including Queen Victoria, but there are only one hundred and fifty-nine listed on the subscriber sheet. Field noting that "these lithographs which were done by Lear on what was apparently his first visit to Rome in 1841, are excellent examples of his skill. They are also characteristic of the best type of landscape drawing of that period and if he had retained the same freshness in his work throughout his life, his name as an artist would be better known today" (Field, page 118).
