Publisher's blue cloth with spine lettering and profile silhouette gilt, octavo, pp. 278. Frontispiece and 7 additional black and white plates inserted. The title page bears the imprint of Minton, Balch and Company, but the spine says Putnam. Confusion regarding this matter may be cleared by realizing that Minton and Balch, founded in 1924, merged with G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1930. This edition seems to have been published during the transition? Book condition is GOOD with shelf-bumping of bottom board tips, instances of mild foxing, and dust-jacket flap offsetting. Price-clipped dust jacket GOOD with chips at spine ends and flap fold points. Rear panel shows shelf soiling more readily than if publisher had chosen a darker color than beige. Jacket now in protective Brodart.

Publisher's green wrappers with brown lettering and plastic comb binding, octavo, pp. 113. The old wrappers and pages have softened through the years and are subject to tearing if not handled carefully. One such tear at top edge of front panel is mended inside with a piece of tape. About GOOD condition. Friendship House is a Ministry of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Done up handsomely in bright red cloth with spine and upper board lettering gilt, octavo, pp. 441, [1], plus one leaf of publisher's ads. Top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded frontis and 11 other full page illustrations inserted. The 6 portrait illustrations are tissue-guarded; the 5 drawings are not. Some pages unopened (see Photo 5). Minor crimping at top page edges from about pp. 16-25 (see Photo 3). Horizontal tear with no loss at fore-edge, pp. 279 / 280 (see Photo 4). A sound copy, about Very Good. Right Honorable West, private secretary to Prime Minister Gladstone, is referred to by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as "tall, handsome, and a favourite in society."

Stapled wrappers, octavo, pp. [29]. Staples are rusty and one was reinforced externally with a piece of tape. Stored safely now in a new archival display sleeve with white card-stock backing board.

Publisher's original black cloth-backed boards with silver spine lettering, octavo, pp. lii, 355. Black and white illustrations. [With:] Two boxed cassette tapes featuring live recordings and dramatic readings of interviews with former slaves. Tapes from Smithsonian Production radio documentary. The whole in a Very Good illustrated cardboard slipcase. (The tapes were published in conjunction with the book and on this day, July 8th, 2023, they are in Very Good condition with no squeaking, dragging, skipping, or hissing detected in a 10 minute playing by us of each tape. Note that the tapes are not guaranteed to remain in present condition due to age.)

Edition limited to 200 copies printed as a keepsake on the occasion of the 20th Biennial Joint Meeting of the Zamorano and Roxburghe Clubs, October 27, 28, 1990, octavo, pp. 8 plus introductory material by K. Garth Huston, Jr. and colophon. String-tied brown wrappers with white label affixed to upper panel. English translation followed by the original French text. Very Good with some areas of light smudging on rear panel.

Stapled wrappers, octavo, pp. 14. Fourteen pages of World War ll military personnel with information particulars divided into columns with headings such as Name; Station; Home; Leave; Date of Rank; Revert to Inactive Status dates; and more. Looking over the many names among these pages. it occurs to us that a great deal of genealogical research might be done by a hobbyist or other interested party, particularly as concerns Women in the Military. On page 10, for example, is a 2D LT Mary Virginia Fletcher of Castlewood, VA, who was for a time at Ft. Bragg. Searching the Library of Virginia's online Virginia Chronicle, we located in the Lebanon News, Volume 115, Number 6593, 22 November 1995, a short biographical / autobiographical entry concerning the Lieutenant and some of her reminiscences of service. The paper used for printing this item has become somewhat limp over the decades, but it is safely stored now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card-stock backing board.

Publisher's gilt-stamped brown cloth with upper board ornamental scrolling in blind, octavo, pp. xi, 207. Patterned endpapers. Previous owner small neat ownership stamp near top of free front endpaper. Gilt on spine has faded. A good bit of foxing on the free front endpaper and the frontis portrait illustrations (see photo). Very little foxing internally after these preliminary leaves. Spine ends, board edges and tips rubbed considerably. GOOD and sound withal. See Dumond's influential "Anti-Slavery: The Crusade for Freedom in America" (page 314) for an account of prison sentences and resulting hardships faced by a Calvin Fairbanks [sic] that align with Fairbank's autobiographical reminiscences herein. Tissue guarded frontispiece and 4 other illustrations as called for. Previous owner 1908 Christmas signature on free front end-paper. Small old inventory number rubber-stamped near top edge of rear endpaper. Fore-edge and bottom-edge untrimmed. GOOD condition with shelf wear and rubs at spine ends and board tips. See WORK, Monroe, Bibliography of the Negro in Africa and America, Mansfield Centre, page 467.

Upper tip is chipped off the final blank page (photo 4).

Tipped in are a color portrait frontis of Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt and two botanical illustrations, all by the Meriden Gravure Company. Includes a fold-out floor plan of the Hunt Library, several other black and white photos of books in the collection, and a color pressmark for the Laboratory Press. Stapled onto the final blank endpaper are (1) a card stating that copies of this book were presented to those in attendance at the library's October 10, 1961, dedication ceremony and then identifying this copy as among those sent to invitees who could not be present at the dedication; and (2) a slip of paper with the name and professional address of Frank N. Egerton, the recipient of this particular copy. A separate previous owner's 1967 name and city notation on front paste down. About Very Good condition with just light shelf rubs to spine ends and board tips.
